What are the rituals for burying a Bishop or priest?
When priests are buried, they are done in full vestments, right? What colour vestments do they use? Violet?
When religious brothers and sisters are buried, are they buried in any special clothing? Like, in most cases, religious who aren’t monastics use regular clothes. Do they just use regular secular clothes when they get buried too?
Also, when Bishops are buried, do they actually wear their Mitre? I’ve wondered about this because that’s got to be at least 18 inches tall, so the coffins must really be irregularly-shaped to accomodate that.
I know that after Paul VI’s funeral, some clerics have adopted his funeral methods of having an open Gospels Book on top and having the casket on the floor. Of course the subsequent Popes were buried the same way, but I also saw of another cleric whose funeral was held in the Vatican Basilica where the same Pauline custom was followed.
Has this become a formal ritual tradition prescribed in liturgical books? Or is this just a more personal tradition, perhaps like having everyone let go of a baloon at the end of the funeral?
Lastly, I read that the Carthusian order’s burials call for the body to be completely covered: the sleeves would cover the hands, and the hood would hide the face. Why is this done? Is this done with all religious orders that use hoods?
