is it permissible to bury a jar of holy water?

we will be getting my dog’s ashes soon and my mom was mentioning this. I have no idea if it’s allowed or not.

I have never heard of burying a container of holy water. What would be the point of that?

I’ve never heard of that before…not something I would ever do.

Am I understanding this correctly that your mom wants to bury the dog’s ashes with a jar of holy water? 🤨

Forgive me, as I know people do different things to help them when mourning, but this just seems really, really odd. I’ve heard of people sprinkling (not pouring) holy water on graves to assist the souls in purgatory. This is a pious tradition, not Church teaching, that I think comes from the story of the rich man asking for Lazarus to dip his finger in water and touch the rich man’s tongue to relieve his suffering.

Dogs, however, don’t go to purgatory so they have no need of holy water on their graves.

I am assuming you will be burying the dog’s ashes. If you would like to pour a little holy water and ask the Lord to please bless you and take care of your dog, or express your confidence in God that He has already taken wonderful care of your dog, that would be fine. As someone else said, the dog does not need any sort of cleansing of sin, as dogs do not sin and your dog has already been cared for by the Almighty, so any grace involved would likely be coming back to you and your family with God giving you healing and strength as you mourn the loss of your dog.
No need to bury holy water and especially not in a container.

yes, but she’s not catholic so I don’t think she understands the purpose of holy water

ok, I will try to suggest that instead, hopefully that will convince her

If she insists on burying it in a container, don’t worry. The container will eventually break or leak, and the result will be the same.
