I was glad to read that the company will try to arrange it so the driver can still drive but not have to drive the atheist bus.

He still has to derive them though, if no other buses without the advert are available! 😦

Personally, I think all he’s managed to do is call more attention to the signs and make himself (and other Christians by association) look foolish and thin-skinned. It’s a fact of life that in this world, not everyone believes the same. When faced with religious persecution, we Christians are called to turn the other cheek, not act all whiny and demand everyone accommodate us. And this doesn’t even count as persecution. The ad does not attack any religion and it isn’t part of any kind of government effort to suppress religion.

Aww, poor bus. It’s feelings must be hurt. 😦
I can understand him though. There is a difference between advertising something anywhere, and on a bus. When you are driving a bus, you feel part of the advert. If you are a Catholic, would you want to drive a bus that says,“Abortion is good, and the Pope is bad”?

See, your example is of something that is actually inflammatory. The ad in question makes no such statement about any religion or religious figure. It doesn’t even state an absolute: it says “There’s probably no god.” As a religious person, I can pity those who are deluded and I can pray for them, but to be offended by their statement of disbelief is, to me, extremely silly and even counterproductive.

That seems to be a typical Catholic response. To a Catholic, typically, insulting the Pope is inflamatory, but insulting God is not.

Typical anti-Catholic response. God is universal and can defend himself. No?

The Pope is identified with a specific group of people who have suffered persecution, with such willingness to continue the persecution simmering in the hearts of many bubbling at the surface of public discourse. So, the example is hate speech to incite hate of a group of people.

Blood libels have been persecuting Jews for centuries, but at least they are afforded some disgust albeit lessening unfortunately. It is still politically correct to slander the Roman Catholic Church in this world where political correctness protects everyone else.

‘I don’t like the type of perfume advertised on this bus, so i’ll refuse to drive it’. Same thing really.

Therefore it is okay to insult God, right? That is what I said, wasn’t it? To a Catholic, it is okay to insult God, but not the Pope.

Goodness, now THIS is inflammatory, even for you. You don’t understand the difference between simply denying a concept (belief in a deity - not even any particular deity in particular is named) and a direct insult?

And that is a typical anti-Catholic response. When did a Catholic insult God?

It is Catholics who worship God more perfectly as we worship God the way God wants to be worshipped.

I think you are wrong here. Jesus said:
Matthew 10:32-33

** 32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. **
** 33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.**

If I were that man, I also would refuse to drive those buses. Better to lose some money than to lose my soul.

Matthew 16:26
**For what is a ****man ****profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or ****what shall a **man give in exchange for his soul?

Sincerely,

De Maria

Again, though, this ad doesn’t specify any god - it’s denying the entire concept of deity. I guess the bus driver could be worried that by driving the bus, he could be held as holding the opinion of the ad, but me personally, I’d call that excess scrupulosity.

The fact that the ad does not specify any particular god means by default that it denies or highly doubts any and all gods, whether Christian or otherwise. So it is a back handed insult to the true God and all religions because it says “don’t worry and enjoy your life” as if you can’t enjoy life when you believe in God. And how does one define enjoying life? A serial murderer may enjoy life by killing people, and that would be fine by this ad’s philosophy, I suppose.

If you honestly think that an ad that reads “enjoy your life” is in any way endorsing murder, then that says a lot more about you than it does about any “philosophy.”

.

Your scenarios are vastly different. If the ad insulted God, it would be offensive. Your ad specifically said “The Pope is Bad”. If the ad said “God is bad”, then it would be inflammatory and offensive. As it stands, it makes a comment that makes me laugh - they’re hedging their bets with that ‘probably’.

This man is a good man. This bus company is not a good bus company – they were kind to the man, but they still offend God by putting up such advertising.

They try to disclaim responsibility for the content of their advertising. That does not fly. You are responsible for the content of what you put on your busses, you get to choose which advertisements you accept and reject.

Prayers and kudos to this upstanding man! 🙂
