Hi everyone,
I’m writing because I have a friend who is struggling with his faith, in that he feels he has little zeal for God and his relationship with Him is quite distant – he has days where he can bring himself to pray, but then his motivation fades as quickly as it came and he will go days without having any desire to pray. The situation is complex but I will cut to the chase. He is particularly bothered by one verse in Matthew:
“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.”
I admit, I have been a little uncomfortable with this verse before as well but have not spent the time to “hash it out” with the Lord in prayer and meditation. I guess it all depends on how you define “salt”, but it seems to say that if you lose your zeal for or faith in God, it’s “impossible” for that zeal/faith to be restored and therefore if you lose your zeal/faith then you’re good for nothing and are basically going to hell (to put it bluntly).
Of course, intuitively, I know this interpretation is wrong. But how do we answer the question that Christ poses: “…how shall its saltness be restored?” He never answers His own question…perhaps it’s meant to just be rhetorical…but what if it was a serious question? **Is it possible to restore it once is has been lost? ** Is it possible to fully lose it?
I suddenly thought of Matthew 19:26 “…with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
But are there any other thoughts? Thanks.
