This seems to be a familiar sentiment I’ve seen on several threads regarding Harry Potter, The Golden Compass, The Da Vinci Code, etc.
Does anyone really think that “fiction” means “a free license to say anything you want and be protected from any and all criticism”? Perhaps I misunderstand what people mean by saying “It’s just fiction”…
Fiction is very influential. An entire generation of people have a seed planted in their head that Christianity is a sham and Jesus married Mary Magdalene, thanks to Dan Brown. Will “The Da Vinci Code” shake the faith of a solidly formed Christian? Probably not. But there are millions of people who are NOT well-formed in their faith or have no faith whatsoever. This novel plants a seed of doubt that may prevent someone from embracing Christ.
I don’t see the problem in taking these issues seriously. Of course, we must be fair and honest about our criticisms. But I think that statements like “Lighten up, it’s just a book (or movie)” only serves to short circuit any genuine discussion of the issues.
I think everyone realizes that it is fiction. Pointing this out only makes it seem like you think the other person is too stupid to realize that. But fiction still has an impact on the way we think.
But maybe I’m wrong. Okay, I’ll get off my little soap box now. I guess I just need to get that out of my system. I feel better now!
