Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Three words from this morning’s Gospel, John 8:51-59: “but Jesus hid” are echoing in my mind and heart. They picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area. I wonder if Jesus hid himself only from those Jews who were about to stone Him. When Jesus left the temple area, where did He go? In the very next sentence which begins Chapter 9, in John’s Gospel, we read, “As He passed by, he saw a man blind from birth…”. Was Jesus visible to His disciples as He left the temple area? They are with Him when he passes the blind man and begin to ask Him about the blind man in the very next sentence, John 9:1
I wondered if Mary was there to see those Jews who picked up stones to throw at Jesus. I do not think Jesus hid from Mary. What mysteries the Scriptures hold for us and how much we need to keep listening and pondering as Mary did.
In our Churches the purple coverings over crucifixes and statues remind us: “…Jesus hid…”, and we wonder sometimes if He hides Himself from us. When Mary searched for the young Boy Jesus, with St. Joseph, they found Him in the temple, yet now the Gospel tells us, “Jesus left the temple area”. Mary and Joseph “found Jesus” because they sought Him. Do we?
Much to ponder in how and why Jesus hid from those who were about to stone Him. Mary, Mother of the Word, intercede for us and help us to seek and find Jesus. Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
