This morning before going to 9:15 Mass, for no reason I was thinking to myself what if someone on this forum uses two different screen names and support himself or herself by pretending they are from different sources. How inappropriate and misleading it will be!

I don’t know why out of the blue I thought about this. Then immediately after this thought,I read your post. I just couldn’t believe it!

Could this forum, use programming logic to trace any multiple users from the same computer? Yes, there is a way to do so.
Of course, there is no way to trace if the user logon two different computers with two screen names. But if the person only has one computer and register with two different names, it can certainly be traced out.

Could something be done here so we will have a cleaner house?

So what you are saying is that there may be people on this site who are being dishonest? People who have been ‘banned’ from the site come back as another identity?

Wow. Even more, you could keep switching identities on the same thread, keeping pressure up on other posters, or supporting a particular position, with more than one voice.

I think that people with a particular agenda might be doing such things, and I don’t know whether the Forum administrators have the technology available to do anything about it.

My wife might be using the same computer as I do. Isn’t that okay?

Also how would you deal with multiple users using the same computer? I.E. Say a husband and wife or family or room mates.

I think you are right. A whole family can use one computer and all become CAF members.

I find out the forum rule:
More than one identity is allowed. But we do not allow sock-puppeting, or bolstering one’s own opinion on the same thread with a second identity.

Really if someone want to do the above, it is up to the readers to carefully realize it. With internet, anything can come into place.

Yes, InLight, our moderators have a huge task (but not a huge pay ) and they give many hours to this noble work. They do not catch everything, so we can be helpful to them when we observe an inundation in a thread or overkill of similar threads to further a personal agenda.

The OP has done this to a large extent, but I doubt anyone has noticed the frequency of these threads which have slightly different titles, but the same underlying message.

I don’t understand sock puppetry in a forum like CAF. It is effective in places like Amazon reviews, etc, because you can cheat and run up the average review and effectively get free advertising for a product by sock puppetry. On a forum like this the fact that several people are espousing the same viewpoint is not convincing to me. A bad argument presented twice is no more compelling than a bad arugment presented once. One good argument can change my mind (I know I’m obstinate, but it does happen). I know people use these multiples, but I don’t think it really accomplishes anything.

. . . except for those who are weak and chance upon these wrong notions of Catholic doctrine. It can be devastating to them, especially at the moment of a loved one’s death, etc. I’m so glad to see positive posts that present the Church’s teaching, in correct context.

A 13 year old has committed suicide right after the result of reading some mean online messages.

As an open forum, CAF has readers from all walk of life, including minors, and the mentally weak. You never know the effect of certain dark messages can have on certain people. That’s why sock puppetry in a forum like CAF should not be allowed. If message of despair is purposely conveyed with similar topics under different screen names, it may hit some weak minds at certain weak moment and cause damage.

Why is this thread still open? I don’t see any new ideas regarding the topic. Good detective work though I reviewed some of these threads and I noticed that a lot of people were banned.

And people who don’t care about others do not post warnings about Hell… They just live selfish lives and if/when they think about people going to Hell, they say things to themselves like, “Oh well, that’s his/her choice…” & Am i my brother’s keeper ( etc).

I have actually heard people (who claim to be christian) say, when asked about doing work to help save souls: “Why do all that? If they end up in Hell, that’s their choice…”

I am tired of people judging Posters who DO care about people going to Hell… & care enough to say what they know on the subject… or what could be true…

As if the Poster is glad there is a Hell and is talking about it just to be hateful…

Maybe the negative responses to this Poster say far more about the responders than they say about the Poster…
