If I am purchasing something that seems to be rather inexpensive for what it is off of someone who has listed the item on CraigsList or Ebay, am I obligated to inform the person of the item’s retail value or to question why the product is priced so low? The item I am looking at is slightly cumbersome and requires disassembly but is being sold for a couple hundred less than what I would sell it at. I am planning on purchasing it today and am inspecting it prior.

Ok, let me expand on that.

If you came across a Ming vase in a little old lady’s garage sale priced at $1.00 the ethical thing to do would be to apprise her of what she has and its value since she clearly is unaware she has a valuable object in her garage sale.

If you have a person selling on eBay and they are within a reasonable price (a couple of hundred is reasonable), it is not really your job to tell them what to charge. They are in the business of buying/selling and should know the worth of their products. And they are in it to make a profit. They could have gotten that item at an auction or going out of business sale for a very low price, and so they are still making a profit selling it below retail and are able to move it quickly with the attractive price. it also might be used, scratch and dent, etc.
 
They may just want it out of their house quickly. I wouldn’t worry about it.
