By masturbating and looking at porn, I broke my lenten promise, am I in mortal sin?

I hate to say it, but I succumbed to temptation and masturbated whilst looking at pornography…

I had resolved not to engage in that activity (at least) until the end of Lent.

I made it 4-5 days, and now I’m back at the beginning…

I feel like I committed a SUPER Mortal Sin (if there can be such a thing)…

But did I?

P.S. To make it worse, my priest is going to guilt trip me again by saying “how long has it been now, 4-5 days?”

Yes and as I understand it, two. The masturbation and viewing pornography are separate mortal sins. Get up, dust yourself off and try again. You’ll be in my prayers!

Let me say this once more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy. Christ, who told us to forgive one another “seventy times seven” (Mt 18:22) has given us his example: he has forgiven us seventy times seven. Time and time again he bears us on his shoulders. No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by this boundless and unfailing love. With a tenderness which never disappoints, but is always capable of restoring our joy, he makes it possible for us to lift up our heads and to start anew. Let us not flee from the resurrection of Jesus, let us never give up, come what will. May nothing inspire more than his life, which impels us onwards!

-Pope Francis

Even if there were such a thing as a super mortal sin, (which there isn’t) it wouldn’t make a difference. God will still forgive you. He doesn’t give up on us just because we keep messing up. I know it’s tempting to think we are worse sinners because we keep failing to keep our promise to God. But that’s not how God sees us. He sees our hearts. He knows we are trying.

We all fall. We all give in to temptation. What matters is if we get back up.

Yes, masturbation and pornography are mortal sins. Their gravity did not increase because you gave them up for Lent, so you don’t need to mention that in the confessional. Use the priest’s comment to motivate yourself to not commit these mortal sins again.

And just above this in Pope Francis book Evangelii Gaudium he say’s -

No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord”. The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with you. I need you. Save me once again, Lord, take me once more into your redeeming embrace”.

**Contemplate My wounds and see if there is anyone who has suffered as much as I, to show their love…

Contemplate for a moment these bloodstained hands and feet… This naked body, covered with wounds, with urine, and blood. Dirty… This head punctured by sharp thorns, soaked in sweat, full of dust, and covered in Blood…

Contemplate your Jesus, hanging on the Cross, without being able to make the slightest movement… naked, without fame, without honor, without liberty…

Contemplate Me in the image of the Christ that weeps and bleeds. There and in this way the world has Me.**

I want to teach sinners that because they have sinned, they should not distance themselves from Me thinking that they no longer have recourse and that they will never be loved as before they sinned. Poor souls! These are not the feelings of a God who has shed all His Blood for you. Come to Me all of you and fear not, because I love you. I will cleanse you with My Blood and you will be as white as snow. I will drown your sins in the water of My Mercy and nothing will be able to snatch from My Heart the Love that I have for you.
How to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Jesus to St Faustina -

"Let the greatest sinners place their trust in My mercy. They have the right before others to trust in the abyss of My mercy. My daughter, write about My mercy towards tormented souls. Souls that make an appeal to My mercy delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion, but on the contrary, I justify him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy. Write: before I come as a just Judge, I first open wide the door of My mercy. He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice…… (Diary, 1146).

13) My children, poor sinners! Do not distance yourselves from Me. I wait for you night and day at the Tabernacle. I will not reproach you for your crimes; I will not throw your sins in your face. What I will do is to wash you with the Blood of My wounds. Do not be afraid; come to Me. You do not know how much I love you.
I hope this has helped

Zeldarocks2: As a priest of the Church of England, Fr. Stanton, once said: “We are all dust, and you can’t expect dust to be up to the mark”.

From what you’ve already divulged, you’re contrite and ready to do any penance imposed upon you by your Confessor. God readily forgives people who exhibit perfect contrition in the confessional, because you are not confessing just because you fear God’s punishment, but because you love Him, and want to return to Him in a state of Grace.

I’ll remember you, both in my prayers and at the altar when I’m serving at Mass.

Thank you all for your encouragement. I will get to confession as soon as possible…

And I’m concerned that it was NOT perfect contrition…

So that would mean that if I died tonight or tomorrow, I’d go straight to Hell?

Or would my intent to confess grant me a sort of pardon?

Furthermore, I pledged this promise to Our Lady, and I believe it was her grace and intercession that has gotten me my first real job recently (today was my second day).

I had pledged my service and entrustment to Her should I get this job, and promised to give up Masturbation and Pornography…

In breaking that Promise to Our Lady, have I lost HER graces?

If you do not have perfect contrition and you perished prior to absolution, you would sadly go to Hell. The intent to confess as soon as possible is a necessary component of perfect contrition, but it is not sufficient on its own to pardon us of mortal sin. Continue to pray for contrition and to be able to make it to Confession.

You have not lost her graces in the sense that she will not take away your job. Beg her to give you contrition and you can promise her that you will try again.

God and Our Lady are amazing:

I was doing a quick Google search on the graces of Our Lady, the ones she dispenses…

I got to one particular portion of an article that gave me a genuine pang of sorrow, I felt like Mary’s suffering at the cross had been for naught, based on my sins…

Next thing I know, I click the back button and right underneath that link on the Google page are three or four separate links to the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows…

I understood by this that Our Lady wants me to recite this Chaplet at once, that I may obtain grace…

Zeldarocks2: Sorrow for having displeased God is the definition of “Perfect Contrition” (as I understand it). Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen said that, in his experience, perfect contrition was more common in the confessional than imperfect contrition. Just having the desire to make restitution for one’s sins by preparing oneself and entering the confessional to confess one’s sins allows the Holy Spirit to work in you and stir up your soul to perfect contrition so that you may receive the Grace of God when one of His priests absolves you from your sins. God is just, yes, but He is also merciful. Remember, He too, was human, and knows our trials and tribulation.

Looking at porn is a grave sin. Masturbation is a grave sin. Breaking a Lenten promise; I’m not sure so I won’t speak to that. In our sacrifice, we offer up a corporal longing to remind ourselves of Christ’s 40 days in the desert. We don’t sacrifice to make ourselves feel better about our temporary control so I would suggest you think very long and hard about what sounds like a habitual sin. This sounds like something you need to commit to rid yourself of for your entire life. Check out Matt Fradd’s site on porn addiction. He’s fought this addiction and what he has to present really is eye opening and will give you a practical chance of beating this addition.

BTW, though I’m personally disappointed your priest sounded like he was chastising you for your weakness, remember, this is the Jubilee Year of Mercy. We are to be merciful as the Father is merciful to us. Forgive that priest if you bear any ill feelings and just confess again. The Lord knows we are not perfect and He gives the authority to His priests to confer absolution upon us sinners.

Keep the faith. Repent your sins and deepen your devotion. This is a great Lent! Make the most of it. God bless you.

Your level of contrition is known to you and God. We can be perfectly contrite when we make our confession and promise not to sin or put ourselves in the situation to sin. But…sigh…we still sin. And usually we do the same sins over and over. Each time, if we make up our minds and steady our hearts, we CAN be contrite. Believe in the Divine Mercy. Pray it often for yourself and, very importantly, for others. Mother Mary truly understands us as her children so don’t be afraid to ask her forgiveness and consecrate yourself to her over and over. Like the perfect mother that she is, she will help us even on our death’s bed.

I am very sorry to hear of your priest’s mockery. This is a great struggle for many young. I didn’t have the internet when I was young - and I hate to think what my life would have been like if I had!

With your willingness to honestly confess, it sounds like you are really committed in this struggle. I will pray for you.

I did it again, twice… The temptation was too great, I could have handled it had I been more disciplined…

I feel like s*** (for lack of a better word).

I need confession ASAP. Pray for me.

There is a grace to each confession; as we repent, are truly sorry for our sins committed, receive the absolution, and complete our penance, God gives us strength to resist further temptation. This is not to say we won’t ever sin again because we have a wounded sinful nature and the evil one SO WANTS YOU BACK! Continue to pray for God’s grace, seek confession as soon as possible, and pray for the intercession of our Blessed Mother that she assist you in combatting the evil one. The evil one really hates when we ask for the assistance of Mary the Mother of God because she’s the only one who’s defeated him in her lifetime. Sorry that you “fell” again; God heals all our wounds. You have my prayers; pray for me as well. God bless.

A good thing to keep in mind when tempted to view porn.

The porn site videos are created and run by people who are the lowest on earth.

They have no regard for people other than using them to make money.

They would have no problem showing child pornography, if they could get away with it.

They would have no problem harming you or or family in order to make money.

Don’t help support them by visiting their web-sites.

Masturbation on the other hand, is a grave sin, but age, maturity and frequency are to be taken into account for culpability, the Catechism of the Catholic says.

But it can and will become addictive if you don’t control it.

It will get easier as you get older, trust me.

"I never reject a contrite heart." (Diary, 1485).

Keep this statement I came across today in mind on your spiritual journey, “Christianity is not a moral matter; it’s a mystical matter.” PM if you want to know who said it.
