BYU has joined a conference which is almost completely made up of Catholic schools except for Pepperdine. The West Coast Conference jumped all over the opportunity to have BYU in its midst. The University of Portland is a Congregation of the Holy Cross school and is likely to influence its sister institution, Notre Dame, to play BYU in football. In fact Notre Dame is already saying they were talking with BYU about a new football series. There is speculation the first game might actually happen in 2011. It seems that Catholics and Mormons increasingly find themselves linked together.

BYU Football will be Independent Like Notre Dame’s Football program. BYU joined the WCC for all of their other sports to compete in.

God bless

They announced this afternoon that ESPN will broadcast most of their home games and any games ESPN doesn’t want will be on BYU-TV. They will have a six game home and home series with Notre Dame.

I don’t know how well going Independent will work for BYU. I guess they have a national following being that they are religious affiliated (Like ND) so I am sure people will follow them but this all seems like a knee jerk reaction to being spurned by the PAC 10/12 and not getting invited (PAC took Utah and Colorado).

IDK 🤷 There is a lot of money to be had in College football with TV deals and BYU must have felt going Independent was the way to go. Certainly the Mountain West Conference isn’t setting anyones wallets on fire with their TV deal. Really BYU may not have anywhere else to go. The PAC doesn’t feel religious affiliated Universities fit into their “culture” of schools and the BIG XII isn’t looking to expand (not that they could anyway). BYU was kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. When the Super Conferences appear BYU was thinking they would be left out (which is true) so they must have felt that they had to go Independent and get their own TV program rolling before the Super Conferences arrive. The writing was on the wall for BYU football.

God bless

I tell you, those Catholic black helicopters are getting angel Moroni logos painted on them even as we speak…

Or is it Mormon black helicopters getting pictures of St. Peter’s Basilica? I can’t ever tell…

I think it’s one on one side and the other on the other, like The Grey Spider(Red Skleton)😃

The Jesuits are behind all of it.
Oh.

Well, that settles everything then. 😉

…though…I’m more likely to blame all those teenaged LDS seminary students who have to attend class at 5AM. It’s revenge.

As soon as I can figure out what it is they are attempting to avenge, I’ll let you know.

reputable sources assure me that LDS seminary students are simply a front created by the Jesuits. 😉

…of course!

You got that on the internet, didn’t you?

Conspiracy theorists, UNTIE!!!

OK im done…😛

I read some where else that independent football teams have to pay other teams to play them. Is that how it works, do Notre Dame, Army, Navy and now BYU pay conference teams to play them? And what about games like Army/Navy, and the ND/BYU games to come, who pays who, or do they just get money from the TV people? How does this work with all the bowl games, do they pay to play good teams to get into them? Come to think about it I don’t even understand who plays who in the bowl games? I guess I was raised in a family devoid of sports interest so I never had an interest and married some one with the same lack of interest so I am utterly lost in this whole business:shrug:

That’s true in a sense. Money is part of the game. All teams pay each other. The way it works is that the two teams share in the proceeds from the game, gate receipts, tv and radio revenues, each getting an agreed upon percentage. Some teams have a bigger stadium and hence larger gate receipts and some teams have a big national following so tv and radio revenues are greater. Hence, since the teams share in the game revenues, it is desirable to play a team that will generate a lot of revenue from a game.
A small school may have to coax a big name school to play them by guaranteeing the big name school a certain amount. That is, why should a big name team play a small team that only has a small pot to share? Unless they are guaranteed a minimum payout.
This is true whether the teams are independent or not.
Of course conference teams have to play the other conference teams, but the pot is shared as well. And with the conference.
And bowl games simply are all about money. Teams are paid to play in a bowl game, and some bowls pay a lot more than others. Bowl games are run privately to make money, so they invite teams that will make money for them. Of course there are contracts and agreements between the different bowls and the different conferences. For instance, the Rose Bowl would invite the champion of the Big Ten to play the champion of the Pac 10. Other bowls and conferences have similar agreements.
Independents like Notre Dame therefore rely upon at-large bowl bids. However, not to worry, because what bowl committee with an at-large slot to fill would not be glad to have Notre Dame in it!
I guess BYU thinks it can go that route too.

99% of the players couldn’t care less what the religious affiliation of the college is.

This reminds me of the game played by BYU and SMU in the Holiday Bowl a number of years ago. That was when Jim McMahon was putting up big yardages for BYU.

Well, BYU was 21 points behind before they could even make a first down! God seemed to be favoring the Methodists. But it seemed He couldn’t make up his mind, and allowed BYU to come back. Methodists, Mormons…Methodists, Mormons… He didn’t decide until the final plays of the game, when the Catholic quarterback of BYU threw a Hail Mary to the only other Catholic on the BYU team, who caught the ball in the end zone, amidst a crowd of SMU defenders.

At least that’s my understanding of it.
