Sure, deny Christ’s divinity for a slip of paper called a diploma. What was that about gaining the world and losing your own soul?
BYU is known for attempting to convert non Mormon students. Not the university itself, but the students that attend there. Please don’t get yourself into this situation. How can this post be serious? On a Catholic board, posting about should I convert to the LDS faith to save some money on college? How silly
BYU Idaho is affordable to anyone especially in contrast to other schools near you.
BYU is a great school. Did you know it has the highest Muslim population in for a student body. It is because of its values and morals. However someone as vulnerable as yourself who obviously is not well chatechized should not go into a situation known for trying to convert people.
Catholic schools often have lots of need-based financial assistance available for those who qualify financially, and most also offer at least some merit-based scholarships, as well. As with anything, there are standards for qualifying; very good students will get the scholarships and students demonstrating need will get financial aid.Greetings and thanks all for the replies,
I figured most everyone would be cursing me, lol. So its nice to see a more positive collection of warm attitudes (praise God)
I can qualify for interest loans, but I was talking more so of the free hand out loans, they give out generally in school.
I’m paying out of pocket currently after a severance package from my old power plant. I have a duty of obligations at home here, that I have to attend to in regards to helping, my dear ol’ mother with her bills and such thing. Non the less it is much cheaper and easier staying here and commuting 45 mins to the school.
that being said,
I guess my inquiry here was, really Why are Catholic schools so expensive if they are for the common man? I certainly don’t have a GPA that is high enough to qualify for all these scholarships; I’m not smart but hard working. I once studied roughly 18 hours to pass my first calculus class. The scholarships for private schools are generally given to people who are book smart. (3.5 + ) I have to work my butt off 24/7 living off of Redbull and Vivran, generally to barley get B’s and C’s I’ve learned very hard the value of a good education, compared to working in the mud and dirt.
I’m sorry but the LDS is in no way Christian at all. Thanks for the reply Sparrowhawk, what I like about BYU is how those general people get thrown out for drinking or having concubines while attending. That being said, I don’t really see where I’m denying any faith, its all Christian as far as I’m concerned with out all the doctrine disputes. I would actually switch to the LDS faith before protestant.
Cheers!![]()

It’s commendable that you want to further your education, and there may well be a Catholic school closer to you that values your hard work and life experience. However, given the fact that you seem to think that Mormonism is just as good as any other “Christian” (it is not) religion, I don’t really see why a Catholic education is all that important to you.
Hahaha … Its the tanic acid that keeps them away from coffee and tea not the caffeine, so plenty ofAt BYU you better stay away from the Starbucks! Well, I guess there wouldn’t be a Starbucks would there? Hmmmm. . . . . Can Mormons drink soda?
Mormons believe God the Father came from another planet, WOW!![]()
I think you misunderstood part of my post; I did not say that students showing financial need won’t get scholarships…very bright students with financial need may well also be given merit scholarships for their academic achievements, in addition to any financial aid for which they qualify. Thanks for the replies everyone.
Despite the financial assistance that is available to some people. Why is the cost of education at a Catholic University priced for the elite people. Is this a matter of tiding in church? I’ve been told, the LDS members have a much cheaper tuition cost thanks to their 10% given every week. which is handed to the bishop in the ward.
I know most parish members don’t pay 10% dues as the LDS church members do.
However; that being said; BYU Idaho, is the more affordable school in comparison to BYU Utah, and Hawaii which are super expensive. LDS members can go to a law school for $3000 a year attending the church’s university at BYU Idaho.
(not my ambition but an example)
The Catholic community would be more important to me, rather then the specific Catholic education. I feel that the church lacks a sense of organization outside celebration of the Mass. I honestly would not know any other Catholics if it wasn’t for the internet.
The 2nd biggest reason I started going back to church was supportive enthusiasm from my LDS friends.
Your right, dixieagle the students showing need will not get the scholarships,
My journeyman told me when I was an apprentice,
" Keep a hacksaw blade in the sleeve of your jacket, so you can cut out the slag when the weld inspector isn’t looking, do what ever it takes to get the job done"
My inner debate here is more so focused to regards as why a Catholic education is priced for the elite class of people. Is this more so a issue of government subsidies
per credit hour? How can it cost more then a community college?
Cheers! and God bless,![]()
Sorry dixieagle, I was trying to agree with what your saying about theI think you misunderstood part of my post; I did not say that students showing financial need won’t get scholarships…very bright students with financial need may well also be given merit scholarships for their academic achievements, in addition to any financial aid for which they qualify.
Certainly, the fact that public universities and community colleges get government money affects their tuition costs, and it makes sense that tuition at private and religious colleges and universities is higher. Those tuition costs can be mitigated by financial assistance programs (government student loans and school-funded merit scholarships) but the government funds given to state schools means they are usually much less costly. Tuition at many private colleges and universities has risen to ridiculous levels.
Is this really a thread asking if it is okay to commit apostasy (a mortal sin), to then take from the LDS church an education at a lower cost for reason of deception (fraud, stealing, mortal sins), and then to rejoin with the church by abusing the sacrament of reconciliation (sacrilage… a mortal sin)???Sorry dixieagle, I was trying to agree with what your saying about the
very bright students.
I am certainly an average student, but I think what you said is really what I was trying to articulate. The bright students where given more in life, and the system will always look towards taking care of them because they are good at reading books. As a person given less abilities by God and having to work 3x harder then everyone else, Why should I not do what it takes to get the job done. Why is this morally conflicting?
I don’t seriously see myself following through with such a plan, but I still struggle to stay Catholic seeing how green the pastor is on that side of the fence. Seeing how well the LDS looks out for one another.
Cheers! and God bless,
