Is it true that this book has a Byzantine Eucharistic Adoration? What is it like? Are there any youtube videos of it?

And if anyone has a spare copy of this book you can PM me and give it to me. Hahah, but seriously. šŸ‘

I do believe that there is an Order for Eucharistic Adoration in the BDW. If I remember correctly it’s toward the back of the book.

I believe you’ll be hard-pressed to find any Eastern (Byzantine) Catholic Church that actually celebrates Eucharistic Adoration. I’m sure there may be some parishes that do so, but they are fairly few and far between. I know of no Melkite parish that does so (Kyr Joseph Raya [editor and translator of the BDW] was a Melkite bishop). Since Vatican II and Rome’s call for all Eastern Catholics to return to their authentic heritage, most parishes have abandoned such Latinizations. In our theology the Eucharistic species is something meant for our consumption, not adoration. We adore by becoming ever more like Him whom we receive in the Eucharist. Our very lives are meant to be an act of adoration, praise and thanksgiving (eucharistia). I’m not condemning the Roman practice of Eucharistic Adoration, I’m simply saying that it’s not a part of our heritage.

Incidentally, I too would be extremely interested in aquiring a copy of the BDW if anyone has a spare. I’d be willing to make a trade for it, if anyone needs a prayer rope (or several). 😃

I had never heard of this book before, so I looked for one on Amazon. It looks like there are a couple but they are selling for $499.99. Why is this book so expensive exactly? Is it that rare?

It is VERY rare and is no longer in print. The publisher, Alleluia Press, I believe is also out of business. It’s really a shame that the BDW is no longer in print because there is a great demand for it. I know of a publisher who tried to obtain the printing rights from Alleluia Press, but was unable to get through to them. The company had actually received verbal permission from Kyr Raya himself, but in order to make things 100% legit it sought permission from Alleluia Press as well. Now the closest thing that you will find to the BDW is the Melkite Eparchy of Newton’s Horologion. However, that is only for the Hours and does not include the Divine Liturigies of St. John Chrysostom or St. Basil, nor does it include the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, or as full of a Menaion. It also has no Octoechos. But that’s understandable as the Horologion is meant for public liturgical use and not for private prayer. Still, it’s good to have and I would recommend it since the BDW is so difficult to come by.

I forget the original cost, but it wasn’t much. Shame I didn’t buy a bunch of them way back when. At $500+ a pop, (I can just imagine the going price for a ā€œmint conditionā€ copy), I could have cleaned up! 😃

Oh well … a day late and a dollar short, (story of my life), but at least I have my one copy. I use it mainly for reference purposes, so it’s nearly new. And no, I’m not taking bids. šŸ™‚

Phillip, the Menaion and the full Octoechos has been published by the Eparchy of Newton, these books are for PUBLIC worship and not for private prayer (although i guess you could use em for that if you so desired).

From what I understand the Eparchy of Passaic (Ruthenian) is the owner of Alleluia Press and does not desire the reprinting of BDW.

Yes. I’ve considered buying the Octoechos from Sophia Press, but I’m a little put off by the fact that it’s translated from the French, which I believe was translated from the Arabic edition, which in turn was translated from the Greek edition. The result is what I’ve heard termed an ā€œadequate paraphraseā€. Personally I’m anxiously awaiting Holy Transfiguration Monastery’s translation of the Octoechos, but that won’t be coming out for a number of years. Still, it’ll be metered to fit the Prosomia, which is a very important feature for any Menaion or Octoechos, and is also an absent feature in our Eparchy’s current editions. 🤷 Perhaps I should just go with the translations of Fr. Seraphim Dedes.

I’ve compared the Melkite Octoechos to the St. John of Kronstdat Press and it’s not to bad, and it is in modern English. It will be interesting to see what comes from Holy Transfiguration, I do not care for Fr. Seraphim’s stuff though, talk about dumbed down! Take a look at anastasis.org.uk/ and see if you like that translation,I think it’s a good translation and one of the best thing about it is it’s free.

That’s interesting. I would’ve loved to have been able to compare the two Octoechos. Sadly I haven’t had the opportunity. I’m still undecided how I feel about Fr. Seraphim’s work. On the one hand it has the advantage of being metered according to the Greek melodies. It also has the advantage of being translated directly from the Greek texts. But, like you said, the translation does feel rather dumbed down, in places at least. I do appreciate the fact that the Melkite translations are both dignified and in modern English. I’ve had a hard time woth the HTM translations in the past simply because in places they are so archaic that they can be difficult to understand (much like the old Douay-Rhiems Bible). It would be nice if the Melkite texts were also metered according to the Greek melodies (prosomia) and translated from the original Greek texts, but I understand that they are close enough. šŸ‘ I’ve heard that even some Orthodox parishes use the Melkite books, and I know I’ve seen the Melkite Octoechos for sale on an Orthodox website before. 😃 I guess they just need to do a complete Menaion and the Services for Holy Week now.

I do enjoy the anastasis website. I’ve been on there before. Thank you for reminding me about it. I’d quite forgotten.

$149.95 which included expedited shipping AND is the original publication, not the reprint that came in the 80s. It is in Very Good Condition according to ebay standards.

Glory be to Jesus Christ!!

Did you pay $500.?

I need to get the ones I have out of storage…I think I have 5 or 6 copies.
My mouth is salivating heavily!!! Would that I had $500.00 for just one of your extra copies.

It will be some time before I can dig them out of storage…I’ll let ya know when I do. And I would never dream of charging those prices! 😃

Oooo!!! Oooooo!!! Please do let me know when you are able to pull them out of storage. I would be VERY VERY interested. Perhaps we could work out some sort of trade. 😃

There is a gentleman at my parish here in VA who also claims to have 5 or 6 copies in storage somewhere. I about flipped a lid when he told me that. šŸ˜›

I used to have access to an autographed copy that was signed shortly before Kyr Raya reposed in the Lord. That would have to be worth a pretty penny.
