Cable TV at Home

I was hopinig to get some insight from folks about having cable TV in the home. A little background…

My parish has the mens program That Man is You (side note if you parish doesn’t have it, the men need it. paradisusdei.org/tmiy/)
My small group was talking about all the filth out in our world today. One genteman said, “Yeah and we pay to have the filth pumped into our home.”

This comment was made a year ago. Ever since then, and especially lately I have had a strong urge to cancel our cable. I was going to wait and ease everyone into it by giving it up for Lent, but the urge is growing to just do it. My wife hardly ever turns it on and I only watch a few shows. The kids use the TV, but they watch DVD kids movies.

So I was wondering what your experiences or thoughts are on getting rid of cable TV? If you have done it, what have been the effects? If you haven’t what are your thoughts about doing it?

the gentleman is right, we do pay for having that toxic waste dumped in our homes and it is something to consider seriously.

If I knew of a way to get only the old movie channel, EWTN, and all the sports for DH w/o the rest of the schlock I would do it. My favorite time of year is summer when DH is working and travelling, satellite is on vacation, and NO TV-bliss.

That Man is You is a great parish program for men, is in its second year here

I agree that most of it is garbage. We only watch the Discovery series, the occasional movie on encore, & the national networks for the most part. Our kids occasionally watch some of the kids channels (i.e. Saturday mornings) but we have most of those networks blocked (cartoon network, nickelodeon, etc.) The reason we even purchased the extended cable package was for the boomerang network; the previews said that it showed the cartoons that we grew up with. We figured, hey, we turned out okay, that would be better than the garbage cartoons they show today. It’s not, it only shows garbage too.

I believe that the legislature is looking into requiring cable companies to offer ala carte offerings, I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing though (I sure hate government meddling in anything).
 
i dropped cable many years ago. why pay for something you don’t use? you just continue to support the filth.

as for a replacement, there is netflix and you can also watch many programs on-line. my brother recently got a fancy DVD player that connects the TV and the computer so he can stream internet movies to the TV.

maybe if enough people dropped cable the cable companies would think of “something” to get those customers back.
 
I pulled the plug on “the family package” (which includes History, Discovery, Food, HGTV, MTV :mad: , and VH1 :mad: ) 8 years ago and haven’t looked back. I kept “basic broadcast” because we don’t get a decent broadcast signal. So my cable bill is $15/month. AND – get this – it INCLUDES EWTN!

Actually, I haven’t watched TV since then. If there’s a special (like the Pope’s funeral/installation, I’ll pick it up on EWTN. Most anything else I want to watch on that channel I pick up via the Internet.

Ditch the cable.
 
We are in a very rural area. We don’t have cable, but we do have satellite. We can lock any channel we don’t want accessible. We love satellite because it’s how we get news, weather, sports, and EWTN.
 
We enjoy certain channels on cable… EWTN, Discovery, Animal Planet, NASA-tv, Disney Channel, HGTV, the news stations, weather channel… there are plenty of stations that aren’t garbage.

On the other hand - there’s a LOT of garbage on regular network TV also… so actually paying for cable is worth it to us to have more options for clean TV! 🤷
 
We have cable…no premium movie channels. Just basic. I also use my parental control feature to block certain channels and certain ratings.

Christmas vacation is coming up,…and I will be certain to block, “Spongebob”
 
I still use rabbit ears.

A friend of my daughter asked what they (indoor antena) was. I told her that that little device saves me over $50 a month. With wide eyes and a bright smile, she turned to her mother and said, “Mommy, we should get one.”😃

No Spongebob??? :eek: I love to watch Spongebob with my teen boys! Yeah, he is a bit out there, but we like it!

We have cable. Mostly we watch Discovery, History channel, Food Network, Tru Tv, animal planet, ESPN, and Fox sports. Only rarely do we watch network TV - morning news, the Office, Simpsons and FAmily Guy.
 
We have cable but no premium channels. I love the Weather Channel (don’t laugh), Food Network, TLC, the Discovery Channel, and I’m a sucker for The Daily Show and Colbert Report on Comedy Central. DH loves the Sci-Fi channel.

We’re hoping that soon cable will be offered a la carte, and we can have the option to subscribe only to the channels that we like.
 
Yep. I love HGTV, Food Network, and Sci-Fi as well.

I would definitely block channels if we had kids.

We do not get any of the movie channels, I think they are filth to the extreme. Some of the channels we get are questionable, but it’s just me and DH so we don’t watch those.

Your sons are teens…my kids are 7 and 4…:dts: I don’t like the show, but my DS likes it. Christmas vacation will be too much temptation for hours long viewing of the deranged sponge and starfish duo.

**So what are you going to do when it all goes digital in the New year? Give up tv completely or get a converter?

and to answer the OP, we have Satellite tv and are happy with it. Yes, there is a LOT of garbage, but there is also a lot of stuff we like. We can choose what to watch.

This is what we do, lock the channels we don’t want.

We received Showtime for having been customers for five years, on our “anniversary” with the satellite company. I sent them a playful letter, naming all the good qualities of the company- and then asking them for something else a little more in line with what we watch. Still waiting for them to work that out.
 
👍 Go ahead and pull the plug! If you’re a little uncertain, cancel it now and plan to keep it off till, say, after Lent. Then by Easter you’ll probably find that you don’t want to reconnect.

We’re going on 3 years without TV reception now, and loving it! I do miss EWTN (although we can get it over the internet), and a handful of other things. But our life is so rich, and other wonderful things have taken the places of those shows. From time to time we will sign up with an online rental service like Netflix (yay, no commercials!) for a few months (especially when we have a new baby). Then we’ll get tired of it and cancel for a few months until we feel like watching movies again. 🙂

Ditch the cable! I’ve given up on watching TV altogether. I’ve rented good TV shows from Blockbuster and get news and other stuff from the internet. There is just so much garbage and think about never having to watch commercials or have your kids ask, “Daddy, what’s an erection lasting longer than four hours?”

Not to mention that you PAY for this junk.
 
We ditched cable about two years ago. It’s only slightly an issue during college football season! With the new digital broadcasts we get plenty of variety over-the-air with an antenna (FREE)–many channels (especially PBS) broadcast several different streams on their digital feed. Plus a lot of programming is available online now. Our ISP subscribes to ESPN 360, so that solved the college football problem.
