There are lots of speculations on this.Is it just me or has no one questioned what the 153 fish represent?![]()
I have read that Jerome said that at the time the Gospel was written, the ancient Greeks knew about 153 fish species in the sea of Tiberias (actually a lake, of course)— so his interpretation was that it represented the totality of nations.
I found also that St. Augustine thought the number was significant. 153 is the 17th triangular number. (Triangle of course reminds me of Trinity). So, mathematically speaking: 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13+14+15+16+17 = 153. Anyway, St. Augustine knew that 153 was the 17th triangular number and felt that was significant in light of 10 commandments (Old Law) plus the 7 gifts of the holy spirit (New Law).
I also read an interesting commentary that said "in Greek the gematria for “Sons of God” is 3212 which is 3x7x153. This suggestion links Jerome’s theory that the number of fish in the Sea of Tiberius is the ideal number of the “tribes of man”, 153 times the Trinity [3] and spiritual perfection [7]. "
