If anyone wants to discuss, they are more than welcome to do so. 🙂

I was thinking tbis poll would be an encouragement (in some strange way) for people who do struggle with these painful …sometomes extremely or beyond words to describe, for some) that they are not the only ones here and beyond that experience this in their lives. At times, a person feels they are the only ones walking in this "other world " while, in fact, there are others who share the same cross.

(Granted, the statistics collected here will not necessarily reflect those of the general population.)

It would be good to separate out depression and bipolar disorder in the poll, as they are different things. Depression of one kind or another is much more common than bipolar.

In this poll I was mainly just curious to see what members were suffering from a serious mood disorder or had in the past.

Maybe we can do some more specific polling on mental health issues of CAF members in the near future.

And I hope the people with an Anxiety Disorder or some other kind of mental health issue won’t feel too left out by this specific poll. “We are not forgetting about you, too.”

It’s problematic, I think, to arrive at precise stats for the general population. For depression, one could roughly say 1 in 10 is suffering from depression. In one recent year, the figure was 6.9% of Americans had a major depressive episode in that year. Something in the area of 2.4 % of the population suffers from Bipolor disorder.

I think the poll is far too personal which is why no one is replying. Usually if one is suffering from some mental issue they post in the prayer intention category or ask for support on the appropriate forums.

I think you had good intention in posting your poll, but the other issue is no one can give medical advice on the forum. It’s a good reminder from time to time.

Its a purely anonymous poll and no advice is requested or given. Its an anonymous poll so I would think that people would not mind. It’s good for people to know that others carry a similar cross. Perhaps for some they don’t want to say but they lose nothing by doing so.

As far as being personal…

I have depression which is currently being managed relatively well. I’ve lived with it not for 6 months, not for a year or two. I’ve had a form of depression for over 25 years of my life. Generally, this is referred to as dysthymia, but I think DSM has given it a new name. Dysthymia is found in just 1% of the population, though. It’s much less common.

Yes, it’s stigmatized but many famous people are coming forward and sharing with the public that they have depression or are boplar.

In any case, it’s a poll and nothing more.

In the past, some of the long-term members here at CAF have been less tight lipped about it, and I think that was generally a good thimg.

I often think that any kind of a mental illness is a really rough Cross to bear, as I think that you “can’t get out of your head” in a sense when you’re not feeling well in that way.

When you’re physically hurting, there are things that you can try and do for the pain to at least try and control it in some way, but when you’re emotionally hurting, I think that it’s much more difficult.

I speak from experience, in both cases.

I have been Clinically Depressed at times in my life, and I have also dealt with anxiety at times too, especially when having to go through any kind of medical test or procedure, which for me, has been frequently enough.

Is “depend on which psychiatrist you’re asking this time” a valid answer?

True enough. It’s far from an exact science. That is for certain. (forgot to include that one)

Pretty surprising how many people are familiar with BP and depression here. You would never know it, would you? I think many people, not all of course, are good at hiding it in real life, too.

I think most have answered for depression rather than bipolar which is different.
Bipolar disorder Is present in approximately 2.4% of the population according to the one statistic I found. They are certainly different but do share some similarities. The depression a bipolar person can experience is essentially the same as that of a person who suffers from major depressive disorder. I suppose I could make a new poll that separates out the two.

I came across this 20/20 interview. I did not know Carrie Fischer was bipolar. It’s a good interview- gives one a good idea of what it’s like to be on the “UP” side of biploar but I think the interview touches little on her depressive side. It may not have been nearly as pronounced as her manic times…anyways, if you’re interested, might give a watch:
