Most ‘cafeteria Jews’ I know follow the commandments they say are the ‘really important’ ones - 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th commandments. They don’t see how taking the Lord’s name in vain would really be offensive, they see keeping the Sabbath as more of a recommendation than a rule, and as for adultery and coveting - it’s not wrong if it doesn’t hurt anyone else right? Or so they say. A lot of them also say not bearing false witness is only for formal court proceedings, and putting down people’s reputation in gossip is ok.
I know some pretty extreme cafeteria Jews who even say that the 5th commandment is not to be taken literally, and things like abortion are okay even though to most orthodox Jews, it is a direct violation of God’s law.
My friends who are cafeteria Jews don’t understand how anyone could just go along with the Ten commandments without makign a decision for themselves.
Well, that’s my experience with cafeteria Jews. Anyone else know any?
Oh, and they eat crawling locusts too.
