I believe that when you have these political figures like Kennedy, Pelosi, Biden, professing that they are Catholic and go against church teaching, we are do correct them.
There are so many confused Catholics.
When ask what’s wrong with the Catholic Church G.K. Chesterton replied, “Me”.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that when someone is objectively sinning or supporting sin that we should remain quiet. It’s just that I think that anyone calling themselves a Catholic “in good standing” is distasteful. To me, at least, it’s like giving yourself a blue ribbon that says “Catholic”.

Fr. Corapi once commented about calling himself “converted”. He said he’s not converted because he is always converting. It’s the same principle.

I think Rose Kennedy was the only one to be a faithful Catholic, but not sure of all of them. There are so many. We know Jackie O was not too religious, nor Teddy- buying his annulment and remarrying after he drowned the girl in a drunken escapade. I am very sceptical of the Boston diocese due to the Kennedy’s exceptional closeness to the Catholic Church regardless of behavior.

I live in Boston, and I have not seen interaction between the archdiocese and Ted Kennedy. At least for the past few years he has never, to my knowledge, attended any event sponsored by the archdiocese.

Massachusetts in general has a very high concentration of Catholics who openly oppose Church teaching. And there are a many public figures among them. It’s a tough place to live, but I know many good people who work for and in the archdiocese and are trying to live out the teachings of the Church. The two groups don’t tend to run in the same circles.

Amen and God bless Father Corapi. Lord knows the struggles we have being Catholic. I’m always falling and God is always there to pick me up.

It bothers me that some so called Catholics are so flippant with the faith and distorts what the Catholic Church is and what the church stands for. No wonder other faiths have such a low opinion of Catholics when we don’t even know our faith.

I had a conversation the other day with some people I work with about faith and this one guy, who said he was Catholic, said that going to church is not important and it’s not in the bible. When I showed him some facts, he blew me off and said that all Christian denomination were the same. I told him they weren’t and he held steadfast on his own ideas. I found myself defensive and told him then to stop calling himself Catholic. I think that bothered me the most of what I said but I’m finding myself defending the faith from other Catholics.

Obviously, there is a great deal more information. I do not think the passage on dissent applies, at least not here and at this time. Shriver is not holding herself out as a spokesperson for the Catholic Church, not is she disobeying any directive handed down to her from the Holy Father. In fact, based on the article, I did not see any disobedience at all, just disagreement.

Of course we cannot judge her culpability but her own words, from the article, show she rejects Church authority.

The quote you gave from the CCC cannot be read in opposition to the totality of what is in the CCC. By that I mean we are to follow our conscience, but we have a serious obligation to correctly form our consience. So, I see no recourse in claiming an erroneous conscience is superior to the truth or that a subjective conscience justifies us.

Let me give and example of the difference, even though in my case the issue is one of prudential judgement as opposed to dogma - Capital punishment. Even thouch I know I can believe as I do, I knew I was in opposition to Pope John Paul II. Therefore, while trying to understand more clearly why he taught as he did, and disagreeing all the time with him on the subject, I have choosene to remain silent are work on the subject, and it is a frequent topic. I do not want to mislead anybody in mistaking my disagreement with Catholic teaching. I have held myself out as a Catholic so strongly that if I were to start commenting some would think that it was Catholic teaching. So I stay silent. I hope Ms. Shriver will do likewise.

The issues listed in the article are not of a prudential matter. Especially abortion. I, too, hope and pray for a change of mind on these matters.
