Los Angeles, Oct. 10, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Bishop Tod Brown of Orange, California, has entered a not-guilty plea on contempt-of-court charges stemming from a lawsuit involving sexual abuse by diocesan clergy.

Plaintiffs’ lawyers in the sex-abuse suit had asked the judge to hold Bishop Brown in contempt because the bishop approved a move to send a key diocesan official out of the country before that official completed his testimony in the connection with the case.

Although the lawsuit was settled last week, Judge Gail Andler surprised many legal observers by moving forward with the contempt proceedings.

I know first hand how corrupt our legal system is here in the U.S. This is the reason why I do not claim to be an “american”.

Note that the case if going forward at Bishop Brown’s request. It was expected that the contempt charge would be dropped when the underlying civil case was settled. However, Bishop Brown requested that it go forward so the he could be cleared of the charge.

I think that is after-the-fact spin from the bishop.

The plaintiff’s attorney’s made a motion to the judge to find him in contempt for shipping his vicar general to Canada in mid-deposition. In response the bishop’s attorneys called this a stalling tactic and as the judge to dismiss the motion. Then the case was settled. Afterwards, the judge ruled on the motion and found the bishop in contempt. Rather than submit to the judge’s finding, the bishop is fighting it.
 
In other news from Califonria and the Diocese of Orange, Auxiliary Bishop Jaime Soto is being transferred to Sacramento.
Bisop Soto has been auxiliary in Ornge for seven years, and will be the “heir apparent” to the responsibility of Ordinary in the state capital.

I believe he was named Coadjudicator bishop, meaning he will automatically become the bishop when Bishop Weigand retires, resigns or dies.
