As FYI - this is not about the schools paying the players. This is about the players being allowed to receive sponsorships, and make money off their name, likeness, and photographics/videos.
For example: let’s say a player gets a sponsorship to be in a commercial, he can do it according to the CA law, but not according to the NCAA. Or lets say a video game company wants to make a college football game, they can pay star athletes for this image in the game.
However, as the president of the NCAA said, most will not get big time sponsorships. However, I’m sure many will get marketing deals in their college towns and perhaps in their states if they pay for a flagship university.
Personally, I think the whole thing is a BAD idea. The NCAA has been against players making any kind of money forever, because they fear what it will do the academic focus and mission.
College sports are already have enough scandal surrounding them… I don’t think allowing players to get paid is going to help with this. It’s going to make it worse.
