Call for resignations

I’d say it’s up for discussion though I personally would not go that far.

I think that’s not a great plan.

Consider first that the majority of the current servings bishops in the U.S. only became bishops after the Dallas Charter of 2002 and have only ever handled abuse cases properly and transparently. Why should they resign because of mistakes made by their predecessors?

I’m all for accountability and transparency and making sure these types of things never happen again. All of that is needed, of course. This strikes me as a wrong-headed solution, though.

Indeed, I don’t want to just have the slate wiped clean so we can begin again. I want those who are guilty of abuse or cover up to have that see the light of day. If they all leave, that might not happen.

I doubt there a high percentage of the resignations would be accepted.
I’ve heard different numbers on the Chilean resignation acceptances. Perhaps someone here knows the exact number…?

I don’t know any numbers off the top of my head regarding Chile, but yes, only some have been accepted thus far.

Ah, so the thought is more that this would be a good will gesture and afford Pope Francis the opportunity to remove anyone who might need to be removed. I’m still not convinced that would be a good idea. But it would certainly be good to see a concrete sign such as that.

I’m just a little bit surprised by how many academics at the more “liberal” Catholic universities have signed the letter.

Honestly, I think this whole scandal is pretty non-partisan. I noticed a lot of “doctoral candidates” though. I didn’t see any names I recognized, but then I didn’t scroll down that far.

I understand the letter. Haven’t signed it, considering doing so, but probably will not.

I am against this, mainly because I don’t have a lot of confidence that the replacements would be much better. I know that in reality that this is meant to be a goodwill gesture and that relatively few resignations would be accepted if this were to happen, but some of Pope Francis’ appointments have left a lot to be desired. The last thing we need is for a number of bishops to resign and have them replaced with a bunch of Cupich or McElroy clones (and in fact, this is probably part of the driving reasoning behind some liberal Catholic academics signing the petition).

Good points. The thought of replacing someone like, Archbishop Cordileone of SF or Bishop Lopes of the OCSP with someone more “progressive” is scary.
