Call No Man Father

I understand it like this:

All Fatherhood comes from God. (Eph 3:15)

We should “call no man Father” (Mat 23:9), because any fatherhood that men posess comes from God, and not from man. Thus men can have fatherhood and be called fathers as long as one recognises that the fatherhood in them is the fatherhood from God.

I believe this is consistent with the teaching of the Catholic Church. If anyone knows better, please let me know. I’d hate to propagate false teaching.

i didn’t really read all you’re replys but, no we shouldn’t call anyone father except our blood fathers. Jesus called Abraham father b/c Jesus was a descendant of Abraham, the same way as all Jews and Muslims. Jesus meant about spiritaul father, b/c God the Father is our only spiritaul father, not a priest
Well, if you WOULD HAVE read my ENTIRE reply, you would have seen examples in scripture where it was acceptable to call non-blood fathers (grandfathers, etc.) by the title of “father”.

So you choose to ignore St. Paul telling one of the NT churches that he is their spiritual Father huh? And St. Stephen (who was our first martyr!) opened his defense with the phrase “men and fathers…” Seems the early church understood that Jeus meant something else…as do we.

Oh yeah… and as to the priesthood…read this letter from Bishop Ignatius of Antioch (you know…like Acts 11:26 Antioch) who was discipled by St. John himself as to the fact that the bishops ordained priests to celebrate the Eucharist.
