Many of us who have close friends or family, I have both, who are gay have a difficult time in this area because we love our friends and family but not what they are doing. It so difficult to adhere to our teachings and continue to maintain a relationship with these people. I have 2 sets of very old friends who left their marriages and are now involved in same sex relationships and are critical of the Catholic Church for not being accepting and welcoming because they see themselves as decent people. My own non-Catholic husband who generally is pretty conservative sees nothing wrong with it. We are being inundated with it to the point where one of our Presidents’ first major actions of his second term is considering going back to the SCOTUS over it. No doubt those of us who continue to hold to the Churches’ teachings on this issue are considered naive. Your wife may never be able to change her thinking without the intervention of the Hoy Spirit on this subject because of all that is happening around her these days. Did you see the thread regarding the news of the assistant principal at a Catholic high school being fired for posting his complete support for same sex marriage on his blog. Even though he knew it was a breach of his contract to do so he felt he had to. I completely agree with your assessment of what has happened in other countries and I see it as just a matter of time for the U.S.
