Calling All 3rd Order Seculars!

Are you a 3rd order secular Franciscan looking to make the transition to religious life in community?

Maybe you’ve expressed interest to a religious community, and were told you were beyond the age limit, or that you would need a 4 year degree, or some other requirement discouraged you.

If you are single (never married, widowed), free of debt, and ready to discern, this post is for you! Check out the Franciscan Sisters of Mary (www.fsmcharism.com) forming in the diocese of Peoria.

Discern at your own pace. Get to know us, spend some time with us, work with us, and continue to develop your spirituality. The members who wish to live in community, do so in the Peoria diocese. Those who are not able or not ready to move to community live the charism in their home parish. Currently, there is a sister in Cleveland, Fort Wayne, Savannah, and San Antonio. Each sister supports herself. Those who live in community share some expenses in common.

The formation director can be reached by going to the website and filling out a brief questionnaire. You can also submit prayer requests. The site is still under construction in some areas, so check back often for updates!

Those interested in meeting the sisters this June 11th or at a future date should follow these seven-fold preparatory steps (in honor of the seven-fold gifts of the Holy Spirit):
  1. Pray
  2. Go to the website (www.fsmcharism.net)
  3. Pray
  4. Fill out the brief questionnaire
  5. Pray
  6. Ask for a recommendation from their parish priest or spiritual director (e-mail submission is fine, as long as a phone number and physical address are provided)
  7. Pray

I sent you an email and then went to the website and filled out the information. I’m ok if I am not a candidate…but would like to know if I missed something or I’m Out ! LOL Kathie

Now - anyone else out there? We are not limited to the Peoria diocese. I have room to expand in San Antonio, and a very spiritual parish in which to thrive.

It was great talking with you this morning 🙂 I stayed up too late last night playing with a website, which I had never done before and it consumed time that would have been better spent sleeping! So, I hope I made some sense of the phone :confused:

At some point, I hope there are some in my area that would be interested in community here, too. Our recently retired bishop has stayed available for the new bishop…diocesan offices are 30 miles from me. There is also a most wonderful priest who is the diocesan vocation director and from what I understand, his responsibilities in this extend beyond the diocese. With his plate full, he is very approachable and diligent in responding quickly.

I wasn’t sure the best place to post this but here it is. After talking with you, I went back to the website and met the sisters and instantly felt something very special…and instant connection…hard to explain, but it hasn’t happened to me before on any other websites I’ve been visiting over the course of the last 2 years.

Also, I had sent your website to my spiritual director and he said it looks really good. I need to send him an email address so that he can send a letter of recommendation. And he is also the vocation director at the monastery so I would assume he will know what to say…but should I tell him what types of things you would like to know or just let him say whatever he says?

He feels that my Cistercian spirituality would blend well with Franciscans.

What email should I give him? Thanks !

Oh, and when I was 9, I saw The Song of Bernadette. Here I was a Methodist child going home to announce to my mother that I wanted to change my name to Bernadette and be “just like her.” :eek: I noted that our dear St. Bernadette had the same affect on you.

He is free to say whatever he thinks best, but some of the things we look for are:

How well he knows you, for how long, and in what capacity.
What signs of a possible vocation does he see in you.
Anything he thinks we should know, that would help us better understand your needs and help you form spiritually.

Thank you, I have the email address now. Okie dokie then…I’ll send them both notes. My pastor is 81 with 5 parishes and only one deacon, so it might take awhile. My SD will probably get ahold of you first.

I’m not 3rd order secular but I do love the way of St.Francis of Asisi life. I sent email to you through your website and thank you for replying it and mentioned that you will put a prayer in the retreat.
