I was not being uncharitable toward aetheism because they don’t believe in anything.

Don’t cut and run. You are needed here.

If being uncharitable to atheists is a criteria for dismissal, I think the author of Psalms would have been dismissed if he had written here, as he did in Psalms, “The fool in his heart says there is no God.”

You’re right. Charity has to cut both ways. I’ve heard plenty of irrational belligerance here from atheists over the last two years. You don’t see them getting bounced right and left. I haven’t, anyway. If Catholics were bounced for giving out a little well-deserved rough treatment of their own, this would be a strange web site indeed to call itself Catholic Answers.

You “fully understand their belief”? They don’t believe in anything.
And tell me as a Catholic, how exactly you understand what he means by The Divine when no one but Christ is Divine. And good for Gilbert, maybe he’s on to something.
Of course I can fully understand cheddar’s belief system.

It is all based on logic, and she (I think cheddar is female) has done a very good job of explaining her logic.

Just because I fully understand does not mean I agree.

Just letting you know that Gilbert seems to have a thing for atheists, and loves debating with them, and trying to get them to admit they are intellectually dumb for failing to acknowledge the world was created by God.

These are your words, not mine. Rather insulting too, don’t you think?

There is certainly a huge difference between demanding of atheists that they prove their main thesis (which is intellectually indefensible) and calling them dumb.

As a matter of fact, I believe, and have stated it often enough in these forums if you have been following me as you say you have, that atheism is not an intellectual position (very rarely do intellectuals of top quality ever defend it) but rather an emotional one. People are atheists because they want to be; they are in open rebellion against God (and perhaps someone else) and they order their intellects to supply the necessary intellectual amunition to kill God. That’s not dumb. That is, however, a mental disorder.

Dr. Paul Vitz, a fellow Catholic, has made a brilliant case for it being so. Kellie, read his book and we’ll talk some more. Until then, try to remember you are Catholic. You are not supposed to excuse atheists and you are supposed to remember such passages of scripture as the one in Psalms:

“The fool in his heart says there is no God.”

If you repudiate this saying, you repudiate your own scripture, not me or Dr. Vitz.
R McGeddon

Far from it, this argument holds no water at all. Atheists are not interesting in “killing God”, they don’t believe there’s one to kill in the first place. How is that a mental disorder?

If you are not interested in killing the idea of God, what on earth are you doing here at Catholic Answers? Perhaps it would constitute a mental disorder to spend lots of time at a Catholic web site trying to kill even the idea of something you don’t think exists?

And if you’re not trying to convert us to atheism, what else would be your objective in being here? Please don’t try that worn-out cliche that you just want to correct false impressions Catholics have of atheists. We know very well what you are about … and our culture today reeks of it.
All aetheists are not bad, they’re awful.
Wow, in all my time here at CAF, I have never seen such ruder posts as these 3.

Gilbert, you said I was “rather insulting”. I am not sure whether you meant I insulted you, or atheists, or who, but you then went on to call atheism a mental disorder. Not only is that offensive towards atheists but is offensive to people who have a real mental disorder.

As a Catholic, I am to love one another, and that means atheists too. And I will “excuse” them as you so put it, as they have failed to see the Light yet. All I can do is tell them about Jesus, and pray, and hope they believe.

How dare you question why atheists are here at CAF! Anyone is welcome. I often find myself reading literature about cultures or rituals or hobbies that I have no “belief” in at all, but it is a way of seeing how other people think, as I am interested in how we all work.

And as for you bella, atheists are not “awful”, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ, to be respected, no matter what they believe.

Amen sister! 👍

I would think the worst time for an Atheist is the moment they die and find out there really is a God and there really is a Heaven and Hell and Purgatory,:bigyikes: especially if they have not lived a fairly principled life or have ignored the poor or have been less than charitable.
Show me in the true Scriptures the word Purgatory?

especially if they have not lived a fairly principled life or have ignored the poor or have been less than charitable.
I guess then it is to say that one is saved by good works? This is what the Bible says about your good works!

We are saved by faith, not works:

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from youselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do " (Eph. 2:8,9).

“But we (pertaining to men) are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” (Isaiah 64:6)

SO how good do you think you are, helping the poor and living as good as you can, to inherit the kingdom of heaven!

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Repent for your boasting in your own righteousness and not giving ALL the Glory to GOD!!!

I just had to peek, but Thank You Gilbert for that Psalm. And I have no other comment on this thread. God will judge those one day. God Bless.🙂

How dare you question that I question why atheists are here? How dare you imply that I have told atheists they are not welcome at Catholic Answers?

Wow, in all my time here at CAF, I have never seen such ruder posts as these 3.

Yours is the “rudest” post I have ever seen at Catholic answers. If you for once think you can control what questions are asked to whom … you are out to undermine the very purpose of Catholic Answers … which is to provide a free exchange of ideas. If you think my post about Dr. Paul Vitz’s concern that atheism is a mental disorder is rude, you should go and read his book and rebut him.

If you think it’s wrong to allege that atheists are here at Catholic answers to see if they can make inroads against Catholicism (something they have been trying to do for centuries), you need to explain why that thought should be suppressed as rude rather than as an effort to get at the truth.

If you think I called atheists dumb (**your **word, not mine) you need to point to the actual post where I used that word instead of falsely accusing me of using it.

If you think “The fool in his heart says there is no God,”
(Psalms) is rude, may I assume you disagree with the author of Psalms or that you find him terribly rude?

And as for you bella, atheists are not “awful”, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ, to be respected, no matter what they believe.

We can respect our brothers and sisters without respecting atheism. I’ll stick with the Psalmist: “The fool in his heart says there is no God.” This cannot be said too often to atheists. Sooner or later, they might begin to wonder whether or not they are not the biggest fools of all, whether or not they have sinned against the first and the greatest commandment of all … “to love God with all our minds, our hearts, and our souls.” And those are the words of one even greater than the Psalmist.

Was He being rude when he uttered them to all of us … including … and especially … the atheists? And are they being even ruder to Him, and to us, when they tell us He doesn’t even exist?

All aetheists are not bad, they’re awful.
First of all learn the correct spelling, it’s

a.t.h.e.i.s.t.s.

I don’t mean to be picky but you continually mis-spell it.

Secondly, do you actually know all atheists to be able to make such sweeping generalisations?

Lastly, your bible says: the standard that you use to judge will be the standard by which you shall be judged.

Let’s hope that you’re whiter than white.

R McGeddon

Lastly, your bible says: the standard that you use to judge will be the standard by which you shall be judged.

Could you be doing a little judging here yourself? Hmm?

Back up. My Random House dictionary’s first definition of “awful” is “extremely bad, unpleasant, ugly.”

Bella is right to register her feelings about atheists in as honest and direct a manner as possible. She does not judge them or condemn them to hell. She leaves that to God, I’m sure. So let’s go back to the same Bible from which you preach and which you think we should be following, but you yourself will not follow.

When Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment, he answered … “to love your God with all your mind, your heart, and your soul.” To break that commandment, to be an atheist, is therefore to commit the greatest, the most “awful” sin, which means a sin that is “extremely bad, unpleasant, ugly.”

If you want to dispute that, you are disputing it with Jesus, not bella or me.

When you are an aEtheist, let’s make sure you know how to spell it first…A-E-T-H-E-I-S-T…either get a dictionary or a Bible. :bible1:

Not in the slightest, I haven’t made any disparaging remarks towards christians.
Back up. My Random House dictionary’s first definition of “awful” is “extremely bad, unpleasant, ugly.”
I am fully aware of the meaning of “awful”, I was born and bred in the country that gave the English language to the world.

There have been some awful people in religious and non-relgious history, so she has no room to throw generalisations around.
Bella is right to register her feelings about atheists in as honest and direct a manner as possible.
She is if her feelings are accurate, but if we’re being honest here, not all atheists are awful so she is being inaccurate.
So let’s go back to the same Bible from which you preach and which you think we should be following, but you yourself will not follow.
I’m not preaching from it, I’m just highlighting that christians like to cherry pick what suits them most. You being a recent example, quoting only a part of that psalms passage.
You take it for granted that the story of Jesus actually happened, when it mirrors the exact same story from centuries previous, in other civilisations. What makes you think your version is genuine and the others not?
If you want to dispute that, you are disputing it with Jesus, not bella or me.
I would dispute whether the bible version of Jesus ever happened at all.
