Here in Australia we are about to hold our national elections. They’re happening Saturday next week (Friday for you US-ers and Europeans). Just enough days for a novena!

This particular election will be quite significant - the opposing major parties (we’ve got a two-party system as the US does) have very different views on workplace relations among other things. So the impact of a change of government would be felt pretty keenly - good for some, bad for others, I dare say, as most changes of government are.

Interesting being part of the process as a newly reverted Catholic. We have

a) compulsory voting (or at least compulsory turning up to the polling booth 😉 ) which is also preferential for the lower house. Meaning it’s not a simple case of ‘who gets the most votes after first counting wins’, and that who you put as your last preference can matter as much as who you put first.

b) somewhat confusing voting system in the upper house, whereby you either put a tick next to the party of your choice and the preferences are determined automatically at the party’s discretion. OR you have to put a number next to EVERY SINGLE ONE of probably 100 or more candidates. Not exactly conducive to well-discerned choices.

I do have respect for our solidly Catholic current health minister who fought hard to keep his ministerial power of approving ( or in his case vetoing approval 👍 ) of the abortion pill RU486, which sadly Parliament voted to take away from him.

On the other the current government don’t seem to be especially pro-life otherwise. Our Prime Minister is personally quite conservative, but he’ll most likely retire within a year or two and hand over to our current Treasurer who is much less so. And they do truly suck in some respects as well 🤷

Anyways, if y’all could join me in a novena that’d be great.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

God Bless
In Jesus through Mary

I have placed your petitions within my heart and will carry them with me to Mass and I will remember your petitions in my daily prayers.
:signofcross: :gopray2:

Father, I pray that Your Will be done in this election. That the people You want to be in power will be elected, that those elected will be moral, upright, competant and capable and will put the needs of the nation ahead of the needs of their party, that the political parties will work together for the good of Australia after the election. I pray that the Holy Spirit guide all voters. I pray the Holy Spirit guide Australia and protect her from all harm.

I ask this through the intercession of Mary, Help of Christians, patron saint of Australia.
Amen

Lily, did you have a particular novena in mind, or should we just choose one?

Yea. Did you have something in mind specifically? Or do we pray anything? Until you specify…:

Saint Michael the Archangel, loyal champion of God and His people, I turn to you with confidence and seek your powerful intercession. For the love of God, Who made you so glorious in grace and power, and for the love of the Mother of Jesus, the Queen of the Angels, be pleased to hear my prayer. You know the value of my soul in the eyes of God. May no stain of evil ever disfigure its beauty. Help me to conquer the evil spirits that tempt me. I desire to imitate your loyalty to God and Holy Mother Church and your great love for God and people. And since you are God’s messenger for the care of His people, I entrust to you this special request: Please guide all Australian electors to choose a party that best serves God’s will, specifically one that will be pro-life.

St. Michael, since you are, by the will of the Creator, the powerful intercessor of Christians, I have great confidence in your prayers. I earnestly trust that if it is God’s holy will, my petition will be granted.

Pray for me St. Michael, and also for those I love. Protect us in all dangers of body and soul. Help us in our daily needs. Through your powerful intercession, may we live a holy life, die a happy death and reach heaven where we may praise and love God with you forever. Amen.

In thanksgiving to God for the graces bestowed on St. Michael: 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 1 Glory Be.

Hadn’t thought yet of what prayers I want to say :o - all prayers appreciated, and St Mike is a good choice :yup:

A Rosary novena dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians would be good. (Can be just a decade each day for those who don’t want to commit to a whole Rosary 👍 )

I also found this beautiful litany in honour of St Thomas More, who is patron of statesmen and politicians. I will probably do both the Rosary and the litany myself. Don’t feel obligated to follow suit though. Of course I’ll return the favour next year before the US Presidential elections as well 🙂

God our Father,
We pray for Australia and for all countries
of this world. Guide us during
the election processes.
We pray for your will to be done with
our countries.

I am in South Australia…here is a prayer I am praying daily put out by the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council - inspired by Paul VI “Popularum Progressessia”

An election prayer

God of yesterday, today and tomorrow
You created a world of beauty and plenty for us to all share,
You gave us responsibility for this earth,
rich in life and variety.

Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,
sacrificing some of our freedom and self-interest
for the sake of the common good.

Enlighten and strengthen us
so that we may challenge
the social and economic systems that create and sustain poverty of any kind…

Show us the paths that lead to mutual assistance among peoples,
to a deepening of human knowledge,
to an enlargement of heart,
and to a more human way of living within society.

May we carry forward the work of Christ
under the lead of the befriending Spirit

Amen

Lord, may we vote in accord with Your Will…

(I have added the last line after “Amen” and also in the fourth paragraph "sustain poverty…and I added “of any kind”)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
