Ok guys I have a £15 voucher for waterstones, and I don’t know what to get. Any books on catholicism, protestantism, christianity, theology you could recommend. I’m thinking ‘imitation of christ’ but anyone have any other suggestions.

We can talk books on this thread 😃

I assume you are interested in Christian books only. Am I correct?

I am a HUGE G.K. Chesterton fan.

I am also big on Pope JPII and the Current one. You might consider some of their writings.

The CCC is good, even if you have no desire to be Catholic. It is annotated and all so that you can find everything that you need.

If you could find the ones made by Bishop Kallistos Wares (nee Timothy Wares): “The Orthodox Church” and “The Orthodox Way”. I’ve been looking for them here. Ooppss–I thought you said you’d buy them for us. 😃

We’ll see 😉

A good book would be “Testament of Devotion” by Thomas R. Kelly.

If you can just get 1 book. I’m not sure what the value of the pound is as compared to the dollar but I think you can afford this.

If I could just get 1 book and I didn’t have it already I would get the Reformation Study Bible ESV

amazon.com/Reformation-Study-Bible-English-Standard/dp/0875526438/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232492226&sr=1-2

This is an outstanding work. 🙂

I’m not sure they are available there…if you are in Northern Ireland, but two books that I recently read and found interesting and illuminating were:
  1. Pope Fiction by Patrick Madrid.
  2. The One Minute Apologist by Dave Armstrong.

Thanks guys! Looks like my wallet will end up considerably lighter!

Now that we’re discussing books, anyone read ‘Christianity’s big idea: the protestant revolution’?
It’s a study of the history, theology anf future of protestantism. Suprisingly it was a rather objective record, with most things sourced. I now use it as a reference book for other things, such as history books etc. I’d highly recommend it.

Well anything in the realm of religion I suppose. Any recommendations?
A very good introductory book on Buddhism is **What the Buddha Taught **by Wapola Rahula. It covers the essential teachings of Siddhattha Gotama, the Buddha, and quotes from the actual texts.

I’ve got this one. It’s pretty good. It’s kind of dry at times though:

The New Catholic Answer Bible ISBN: 1-55665-485-5 is really good. It references where to find Catholic beliefs and practices in Holy Scripture.

I have the book written by Bishop Frederick Justus Knecht, D.D. called A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture. It has extensive footnotes.

Does anyone have opinions about this book?

He’s excellent. Orthodoxy might be a good place to start.

And let’s not forget C.S. Lewis.

Right on.

As a couple of examples, I would mention JPII’s Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason) and Theology of the Body. (I haven’t read the latter, but I’m always hearing good things about it.)

I read Theology of the Body. It is good.

JPII was a philosopher, and his writtings read like it. BXVI is a theologin, and his stuff reads like it. Both of them, however, do write for the common idiot like me sometimes. 😛
