Calling an Ecumenical Council

I know its not my place but I think one way to re-unite the Catholic faith with the Orthodox would be to hold another ecumenical council. There are a variety of reasons to call one. The first being the spread of hostile religions that persecute Christians throughout the world. The second would be strengthening the ties between the various churches. The third would be discussing the various doctrines each church carries and their affects on the faithful. A key issue would be the discussion of why so many of the faithful tend to become lax in the faith; many ultimately leaving it all together. I admit I have alot to learn but I feel that the Greek Orthodox Patriarch should be the one to call it and head it as the issue at his Patriarchal See is in the most danger. The question is how can we suggest this to him without appearing as a bully? They’ve gone through enough hell in Turkey.

It sounds like the Council of Florence, which was called in the 15th century to reunify the Church and protect Constantinople from the Turks.

While reunification was agreed upon, it was rejected by the popular sentiment in the east and became moot with the subsequent fall of Constantinople.

As long as reunion is thought of in terms of submission of one party to another, this will always be the case.

If reunion is thought of in terms of reconciliation, restoration of communion, and love, I think better results will be achieved.

There has to be a “Supreme Pontiff”, the successor of Peter, to whom all bishops look for guidance, and is the King of Kings Chief Steward on earth. Theres no way out of it. Anything else results in disunity and doctrinal drift.

If the Eastern Orthodox Churches accepted the Pope as “Patriarch of Patriarchs”, it wouldnt logically mean that they would have to "submit" to the rest of the Catholic hierarchy. Disputes from past centuries should be dead and gone. Why cant the hatchets be buried…on both sides?

Speaking of which…‘patriarch of patriarchs’ was an expression used to describe the Bishop of Rome in the ancient Assyrian canons (pre-Ephesus), was it not? (Just in case someone is under the assumption that this is a Latin novelty).
