It is a warning not to elevate anyone to the level of our heavenly Father. We are not to have a spirit of superiority and pride. If we exalt ourselves we will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

So then the question is – do officials in the Roman Catholic hierarchy do this? That’s obviously something we’re not going to agree on.

That is a good question, and we probably don’t agree entirely. I think it is safe to say that some do and some don’t. (We are all imperfect sinners and only the Lord can read their hearts) Matthew saw some of the same faults in the Church as he saw in the scribes and the Pharisees, which is why he gives the warning to his fellow Christians.

With that said the context relates more to Matt 6:2-5. The hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees is the difference between their speech and actions, and that they are only trying to enhance their reputations as religious persons. Jesus is warning against this type of behavior.

In Matt 23:13 Jesus says “You lock the kingdom of heaven” because their authority is used in such a way as to be an obstacle to entrance. Earlier in Matt 16:19 Jesus tells Peter that He will give him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. The authority gives entrance into the kingdom (the kingdom is closed only to those who reject and abuse the authority)

Peace,

Ryan 🙂
