Hello, people of the boards.

I am someone who came quite late to Catholicism, around 2 years ago, I am not “officialy” a Catholic as I missed out on the chance to be Confirmed due to illness meaning I missed a few RCIA meetings and Masses.

A friend of mine has recently declared that she is “walking with the Lord” and os attending Calvary Chapel. I went with her this Sunday to experience it with her. All I can say is:

Her boyfriend has it in is head that there is currently a French Jew in line for Papalcy and that when he gets voted in the Jews will follow him and the Catholic church will be the Kingdom of the North and the new Pope will be the Anti-Christ…

Now this disturbs me for many, many reasons and has only confirmed my belief in the Catholic way of doing things…

Can anyone enlighten me any more ? Ive tried having a Google but cant find much.

People can and will say almost anything, particularly on the internet. People are free to have any opinion and to state that true or even false things are facts. Stating things doesn’t make things true nor are all opinions equally valid. Free speech is free, but again you get what you pay for.

The wonderful thing about the Catholic Church is that all it’s dogma is backed up by unquestionable logic and it is consistent and unchanging. Truth needn’t be changed, it simply is. 2+2, for example, will always equal 4.

Other people can say they have the opinion it equals 6 or state it’s a fact that it equals 10 but that doesn’t make it not equal 4 anyway.

Truth isn’t relative. That is why relativism is so dangerous.

Your way of thinking is absolutely right.

This is reformation thinking that has been translated in time. The entire millenial thought process survives because each generation believes that Jesus is returning in their life time which makes it ever more urgent to join that church that preaches that stuff…

The reformation thinking as you know is that the OHCAC is the whore and the Pope is the anti-Christ…and that is carried in time very subtley and sometimes not…while there are 5 points of Calvinism…you may want to familiarize yourself with the 6th point…

historicism.net/readingmaterials/sixthpoint.pdf

You should be familiar with this document, every Protestant that has been educated knows it, all Protestant Pastors know it and if you know and understand it then you can understand where this thinking comes from…

The dispensationalists as you know have thoughts about Isreael, Jews and their conversion and this appears to be some sort of mix of the 6th point of Calvinism and dispensational thought.

It is usual to see Calvinism infiltrate denominations…in the Baptist arena it is called “Doctrine of Grace”= Calvinism…so you see Calvinistic Baptists…and Dispensationalism infliltrates churches too as does fundamentalism…and it is a mix…so possibly you are seeing a mix of the two…It causes those that attend this church to stay and try to convert others…since the world is ending in their lifetime and all prophecies as they see them are coming to pass, Jesus is coming soon…we agree…when???This is my opinion.

Stop going to Calvary Chapel…👍

Calvary Chapel, if I recall correctly, is an Evangelical-style church that is heavily involved with dispensationalist End Times prophecy. They generally believe in a literal reading of Revelation. To be brief, they believe there will be some sort of global calamity (or the rapture) that will encourage the world to rally around a strong, charismatic leader, who is the Antichrist. The Antichrist is supposed to encourage people to rally around some sort of ecumenical religious institution that is supposed to encompass all faiths in some way or another. Many steadfast Evangelicals believe that that institution will be based on the Roman Catholic Church, the “Whore of Babylon,” primarily because it is already a massive, world-wide institution, and allegedly, with many pagan elements.

That is probably why he made those statements on the Pope.

Your friend who attends Calvary Chapel will likely tell you these things, also (which are espoused by those who attend Calvary Chapel):

*** Constantine started the Catholic Church [one of the perennially under-represented apologetics topics]
  • Christians aren’t obligated to follow the Ten Commandments - only Jews are, because it’s in the OT, not the NT [the whole ‘new covenant’ thing]**
    etc., etc.
I hope it’s within forum rules to express my personal opinion that Calvary Chapel is outside the “mainstream” of “evangelical Christian” mega-churches.

You’ve run into an anti Catholic bigot, don’t take them seriously.
They will glom onto anything if it runs down the Catholic Church, and their weird conspiracies change each decade when world leaders change.
I first ran into them in the early eighties, Reagan was supposed to be the anti Christ and the Pope was supposed to be false prophet…see Revelation 13.
Many of these guys are actually ex Catholics reaching for whatever will help them believe it was right for them to leave the Catholic Church. Others are just bigots who can’t keep their noses in their own Church.

And by the way…the stuff you described is not a Calvary Church teaching, nor is it typical of Calvary Church members, or non Catholic Christianity. Most non Catholics consider anti Catholics to be something of an embarrassment.

Up until about a year or 2 ago the ArchBishop of Paris was a convert from Judaism.

I cannot remember his name.

I think he is retired and do not think he is in line for the papacy
Maybe this fool was thinking of him or maybe there is another French Jewish convert who is a bishop.

Anyway, I’m sure you are smart enough to dismiss this for the garbage it is.

Protestants do love their anti-Catholic conspiracy theories.

Maybe it strengthens their weak faith.

Who knows?

Who cares?

God bless and welcome to the true faith.

Nothing has come up on Google search because it is not true. Ask your friend’s boyfriend to cite his source for this claim and I bet he cannot come up with a single reference. There is never anyone “next in line” to be the new pope. The pope is elected by the Conclave and it is usually a surprise who gets it. Do not let this kind of thinking disturb you, return to RCIA, finish your program and come into full communion with the Catholic Church. Jesus is waiting for you in the Holy Eucharist.

Calvary Chapel. It was stared by Chuck Smith during the hippie era. I lived in So California in the mid 70’s-early 80’s. Chuck Smith predicted that Jesus would rapture the church in 1980. He later apologized along with Hal Lindsey (The Late Great Planet Earth) who made a similiar prediction.

Her boyfriend probably didn’t know (among many other things) that the Cardinal died in 2007. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marie_Lustiger

As for Hal Lindsey and Chuck Smith and the 1980 Rapture, They only assumed that it didn’t happen because they were “left behind”. In fact it did happen, but so few were raptured nobody noticed. (LOL - sorry.)

On Good Friday, 2010 I was in my car listening to chuck smith talk about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene. chuck smith got to the point where Jesus repeated the prayer to His Father for the third time, Father your will and not mine be done. chuck smith then proceeded to say that, you can check the archives of the show,
Code:
   "JESUS IN WRONG" :tsktsk:
for repeating the same prayer. chuck smith kinda chuckled when he realized what he had said but chuck never apologized or took back , that I know of, the statement.

I have heard other anti-Catholic statements out of Chuck Smith and that station but I keep listening anyway. Sometimes I feel like a moth to the light because I do keep listening. I probably need reconciliation to cleanse my soul from that sin. God please forgive me!:signofcross:

So long as you are educating yourself in the faith of the Catholic Church I don’t think simply listening to a protestant radio show is sinful unless you have an intention of purposefully leaving the Church. When I hear such things, it calls to mind how blessed I am to have been led to the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

We need to pray for Chuck Smith that the holy Spirit will guide him on a “Journey Home.” Wouldn’t it be great some day to hear Marcus Grodi on EWTN interviewing him or Hank Hanagraff or Franklin Graham or some other prominent evangelical as new Catholic converts?
