On the Carthusians’ website it notes that, unlike the Benedictines, Carthusians and Camaldulites have a hermetic calling within their monastic rule.

Who are these camaldulties? I tried a quick google search and it only threw up the same Carthusian homepage and other pages that quote from it verbatim. Wikipedia has nothing. Neither does New Advent, the Catholic encyclopedia.

Any ideas? An obscure order indeed by the sound of it.

Hi DL82,

I think it is spelled camaldOlite. Check out this link to the catholic encyclopedia.

Thanks VC, sounds like an interesting group. I like the influence of the Eastern Church on their way of life. Seems that there are a few houses in America, but none in the UK. I’ll pray about it.

Camaldolese.

In the Carthusian family, but not nearly as strict. Combine the cenobitic with the eremetical --life in common with the hermit’s life, and in varying amounts according to the individual. They also conduct retreats, which the Carthusians don’t.

Two men’s locations from the same branch, both in California, both in great locations, one on Big Sur, insanely beautiful, the other in Berkeley, a great and beautiful community.

They are rebuilding the Big Sur monastery, but were evacuated during the recent wildfires. Fortunately, the monastery wasn’t damaged.

Worth a look.
