I will also weigh in favor of Nikon D-SLR cameras.

We bought a D-70 several years ago. It is very solidly built. Lots of features if you are an advanced user, but easy to use if you are not. Nikon support is great too. At least for our camera they have provided periodic firmware updates, so that product can be improved upon even after sale.

That said I am sure there are other great cameras as well.

Good advice. If you get a slow, cheap memory card, the camera can freeze up for 5+ seconds every time you take a picture. More expensive, high performance memory cards will allow you to take pictures much more quickly. Many people do not realize this.

This is not an issue with a Nikon or Cannon digital SLR camera. They have a certain amount of built-in memory so that the image is snapped the moment you press the button - no delay whatsoever, even with a cheap SD card. You CAN swamp it if your try to rapid fire 3-4 pictures, but not single shots.
