I will also weigh in favor of Nikon D-SLR cameras.
We bought a D-70 several years ago. It is very solidly built. Lots of features if you are an advanced user, but easy to use if you are not. Nikon support is great too. At least for our camera they have provided periodic firmware updates, so that product can be improved upon even after sale.
That said I am sure there are other great cameras as well.
