Camping anyone?

We had a great weekend camping on lake Huron (Point farms near Goderich).
We car camp, strangely this time we had a hydro site as that was the only thing available (prefer no hydro). So we brought our electric frypan and DH took the laptop (he watched DVDs ) But he did play and spend time with DS, so I should not complain. We had fun on the beach and flew a biplane kite for the 1st time (DS has had it for 6 years) wind was great.
Was a great trip, on the way back, as we neared home DS says “15 minutes to electronics”

Wow. Looking through my old posts…

Sadly this year we are not camping, a bit of a hectic summer - house renovations and projects…
Last year, it was just DS and self that went camping ( 2 trips on lake Huron )

We went camping this last weekend and all in all it was a nice trip. We had some rain–actually torrential the first day, but managed to get set up between the raindrops. We shopped in the local town and hiked a bit, rested, and went to Mass at the local Catholic parish, which is always interesting. I injured a foot while packing up to come home, but it’s doing better now. We usually go for just a couple of days over weekends, but we are hoping to one day take a nice long vacation–a week or two of camping, God willing.

Most of our vacations are camping vacations. Couldn’t afford to go many of the places we’ve been any other way! We have a popup camper we pull behind the minivan. It’s a modest amount of setup work, but you get your own bed, heat, running water, even a mini toilet. And it all stays packed up waiting to go with enough storage to keep the permanent gear inside ready to go.

We’ve been to Glacier NP, the Black Hills of SD, Rocky Mountain NP, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Lake Between the Lakes KY, Acadia NP Maine, and dozens of places closer to home.

Popups are ideal if you can be happy with the world’s best tent. If you’re expecting an RV for a low cost, you may not be happy. Ours is 24 feet long setup, cost about $8k brand new. Next trip: Telluride, CO. Cost of CG fees for a week (full bathrooms with showers): $129. The camper paid for itself after the second long vacation over similar vacations in hotels and restaurants.

I have spent only one night in a tent in the woods and this was to discharge my fatherly duties when my daughter was a girl scout. So, been there, done that. Now my idea of roughing it is staying in a hotel with no indoor pool.

An update from my ‘07 post, we had to let the Scamp go when my dh lost his job a few years ago. I was heartsick at the time over it, but we actually found something we like better since then. A couple years ago we bought a 5’ x 10’ cargo trailer we had customized for a camper. The maker did some modifications for us, such as raising the roof 6", putting in two windows and a trailer door with screen door, plus electric connections. But we did all the rest, making a bed/bench unit, a countertop for the galley, wire shelves and baskets for storage, an electric Coleman cooler for a fridge, a small AC unit, a canvas bag with cloth shoe pockets for clothes and other storage, and a porta-potty. We have a microwave, toaster, and an electric frying pan for cooking when we don’t want to cook outdoors. It works just fine for the two of us since we only go weekend camping but I think it would still work for a week or two, if we should do that. It’s easy to tow and fits into small spaces.

Anyone else here enjoy camping?
We are off camping this long weekend on Lake Huron. We love camping but because of busy schedules, we can only do this one trip this year. We started camping after we were married and have taken DS since he was a year old, always in a tent.
Even though it means a lot of planning and packing up the whole house for the couple of days, we love it. This particular camp site, we have been to before and the sunsets are just awesome.
After booking a camp site, my next step is to find the closest church and call them about Sunday / Saturday mass times.

I like camping for short periods of time and prefer car camping or camping out of a kayak along a sandbar. I don’t like parking lot style camping that’s not really camping to me. I’m good for about 2 nights after that I’m done.
