Can a Blessed be Someone's Patron Saint?

My grandmother is planning to be baptized into the Church Easter this year. Her favorite saint is Blessed Pope John Paul II, but he will not be canonized until after Easter. Could she still pick him as her patron saint, since he is a blessed, or can only saints be chosen? Thank you and God bless! 🙂
