Yes. If he is elected by the other cardinals at a conclave convened for the purpose of electing a new pope.

Any Catholic male, without exception, an be elected Pope.

Sure of course there are Byzantine Rite Cardinals.

We’ve had plenty in the past. I suppose in the future we could have more:

For Example

Born in Greece
Pope Telesphorus (125-136)
Pope Hyginus (136-142)
Pope Anterus (235-236)

Born in Syria
Pope Anicetus (155-165)
Pope Sisinnius (708)
Pope Constantine (708-715)
Pope Gregory III (731-741)

Born in Africa
Pope Victor I (189-199)
Pope Miltiades (311-314)
Pope Gelasius (492-496)

Born in Croatia
Pope John IV (640-642)

I don’t know if any of these were Byzantine, some may have been Ruethan, or Coptic, or who knows. But they were probably not all Roman Catholic.

Hi Evan,

Thanks for doing that research. I did not realize there were so many Eastern Church popes.

All true Catholics are “Roman Catholics”, a name given us by Anglican “Catholics”. Catholics of Western Europe and their descendants belong to the Latin Church and are 99% Roman Rite. Your sentence should read, “But they were probably not all Latin Church Catholics.”

Bottom line, we should avoid the term Roman, as it creates confusion.
