Brother raised Catholic, his wife raised Baptist; married and attending a Lutheran church. They have asked me to be godmother and raise niece if necessary. I love them all dearly and feel honored to be asked. But can I baptize her? I have researched Catholic literature and have not found anything that states I cannot baptize her into the Christian faith. Please help.

You cannot personally baptize your niece unless she is in immediate danger of death. It is her parents who must have her baptized. If they choose to do so in a Lutheran church (which would violate your brother’s duty as a Catholic to baptize and raise his children Catholic), then you cannot agree to be the child’s godmother. Only if they agree to have the child baptized Catholic and do their best to raise her Catholic, with your assistance if necessary and desired, could you agree to be godmother.
