I have a niece that has been living with her boyfriend. He was baptized Catholic. Several people have voiced concern about the relationship of course that is second hand information. They are planning to get married in a Methodist Church. They would like to have my daughter be a candle lighter in their wedding. My husband and I have said that she can’t, of course now they are trying to talk us into it. I don’t want to make a rift in the family. My family is the only practicing Catholics on that side. There is sister in-law who calls herself Catholic and is allowing her daughter to participate in the the wedding. Of course the SIL does not attend Mass and none of her children have received any of the Sacraments and they are well old enough to have received at least three of them. How do I explain very gently that we can’t allow our daughter to be a candlelighter. My husband and I have come a long way in our faith and when we got married we didn’t do everything on the up and up either. I can’t even begin to explain how much I regret that. My husband only came into the Church this year after sixteen years of marriage. I don’t want to hurt my niece and I want to maintain a relationship with all of them. I need help navigating this.
