Can a Catholic watch soap operas?

I have been watching one of the soap opera’s since the late 80. Not regularly only when I have time and not in front of children. The other soap opera is from England. Both of whom have gay characters. One of the soap opera has married gay couple and the other one is just a character. Is it a sin to watch these shows? I usual watch dvd’s of television shows from the 1960’s not any comady or other television shows that is out there today.

As long as you’re an adult who can recognize that it’s just a tv show and isn’t necessarily a model for your own behavior, sure.

With media, you have to discern if the media you consume helps you to become a better person or helps you to become a worse person, and then you have to make a prudential decision about it.

Also, there’s no such thing as media that has no effect on a person. This is a myth resulting from the ego. Everything we watch/listen to/eat/smell/touch/learn has an effect on us; body, mind, and soul.

Coronation Street? There are so many gay characters in that, it’s getting a bit ridiculous. Not that I personally have anything against having gay characters on TV, but there must be proportionately more in Weatherfield than anywhere else in Greater Manchester! They have had at least 10 lesbian and bisexual women in the show.

No, it is not a sin to watch as soap opera whether it has gay characters or not. What would the history of litterature look like if we were only allowed to write and read about virtuous people?

A few of my favorite actors from the 60’s and the 70’s were gay and I greatly admired them for their acting and singing talent. And I do watch their television shows.
