Can a Catholic who has never confessed before, go to confession?

Hello 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I was baptized Catholic as an infant but was not reared in the Church. Now, on my journey towards Catholicism, I feel myself needing and wanting to confess my sins.

Am I eligible for confession even though the only sacrament I have received has been baptism, not Communion or anything else? Must I wait until I am fully received into the Church?
 
Dear Jessica,

Certainly, since you are already baptized, you will need to go to confession before you receive your first Holy Communion. This is usually done shortly before you make your profession of faith. However, there are no laws that state that you can’t go to Confession earlier so long as you understand what a sacrament is and the nature of the sacrament of Penance (the proper name for Confession). You ought to discuss this with a priest or with the RCIA director.
