Can a Catholic work in the fashion industry?

I am interested in becoming a fashion stylist, but I do not know if this will conflict in any way with my Catholic faith. Fashion is what I know and what I do best. I can’t think of any other career that interests me. But I am worried that I would get involved in photoshoots that are immodest or immoral. But then, most stylists are freelance and can turn down jobs that they don’t want to do, and many times the stylist has imput on the concept of a photoshoot. And of course, they find and style the clothes. So perhaps I am worrying over nothing. But maybe someone here can see something that I can’t?

Does anyone here have experience in the fashion industry? And does anyone know of anyone in the industry who is a practicing Catholic?

ok im not a fashion designer but i do have friends who are into the business (also i plan to work in film industry after my studies so there is similar sort of pressure). One of my friends just started last year or the year before and she is a catholic. Basically, she doesnt head in the direction of immodest fashion. I mean there are plenty of other avenues in the industry. Even if the industry maybe heading in that direction. I guess try something different and more original. I also think that alot of the immodest fashion stems from designers who maybe looking for originality since fashion seems to go and come back into style. But that does not mean that you have to take this route. And personally yes, you will be under pressure to also make something that fits in with the fashion of the day and which also displays innovation. But don’t fret, it is possible! o and plus if you say want to make something that appears low cut or somthing like that - you could always get your client to wear a singlet or something of the sort underneath.

Sorry, I am not in the industry nor do i know anyone who is (Catholic or not)

But I wanted to offer you some encouragement! If this is the career path that you want to take, do it! No matter what we do in life we are going to come across things that conflict with our faith. Pray about it and then proceed in the way that serves our Lord. If faithful Catholics stayed out of every “iffy” industry then who would be able to make any changes? Go out and live your dream while being an example of a faithful Catholic…who knows who you may influence?

I don’t quite know what a ‘fashion stylist’ does, but any career in the fashion industry (as opposed to being a simple tailor) would be questionable, in my view. I say that because the fashion industry tends to feed on and promote the materialism and vanity of man in its worst forms, vices which are contrary to Christian virtue.
