Both abortion and the death penalty are legally sanctioned killing. Neither the fetus nor the prisoner wants to die. Neither has a choice in the matter.

I also agree with this. But remember, the Catholic Church is **not **100% against Capital Punishment.

If the police were perfect, if prosecutors were perfect, if judges and juries were perfect, then perhaps one could support Capital Punishment. But since all of these people are not perfect then Capital Punishment is absolutely wrong. Many innocent men and women have died because people want revenge rather than the justice of life imprisonment. I am amazed that anyone supports it especially those who purport to value life.

I agree, but like I said, the Catholic Church is not totally 100% against Cap Punishment… These days, should be used very rarely if at all…but there is that small window that doesn’t totally say it is against our beliefs as abortion certainly is…

The Church is inconsistent when it comes to the sanctity of life.

I doubt anyone could be a Christian that supports abortion. As far as Capital punishment is concerned, God ordained it through the institution of government; unfortunately we do not apply God’s standards that are meant to protect a civilized society. However, murder or killing an individual by another individual is contrary to God’s teaching.

And For Capital Punnishment ?
Unfortunately, yes. There are many Christians, usually Protestant from what I’ve seen, who are pro-life in birth, but completely opposite in death. It’s very contradicting through my eyes, but hey! Whatever makes them sleep at night.

I, personally, believe that both abortion and capital punishment are illogical and (depending on my mood) weak positions. It tells us how careless and often selfish we are as a society… I mean that in the best possible way, of course. 😉

They can and should.

Many prisoners are killed each year but those who should have been executed.

The slow pace of executions or the lack of executions leads to additional innoncent deaths.

The Church would NOT support capital punishment even if they were perfect.

illogical; see above

I agree

Because there is a difference between murder and self defense.

The Church does not oppose all capital punishment.

Capital punishment saves innocent lives.

If you oppose capital punishment, you contribute to the deaths of innocent people.

God ordained it through the institution of government? Oh, come on now.

If the standard is to protect civilized society, then life in prison without parole will do that adequately.

Not true.

Hundreds of people have been murdered in prison by those who should have been executed, including prison guards.

Nonsense. 93 countries do not have capital punishment and their murder rate is lower than the USA. We keep company with China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iraq. We are the only western country that has the death penalty. Our murder rate is by far the highest.

Capital punishment does not deter crime.

There are many varibles for the murder rate.

To claim that we have capital punishment is not really accurate.

It is rarely used and it is not applied uniformly or in a timely manner.

Capital punishment saves lives because it removes murderers from the company of other human beings.

That is a security issue. It is not an excuse for captial punishment.
Why have any laws at all?

If you oppose capital punishment, then you share responsibility for the deaths of those murdered by previous perpetrators of murder.

How very right, you are.

Compared to the U.S. states who do not have the Death Penalty, their crime rate is about the same as the rate in U.S. states who do have that penalty… most likely because a person in the murderous state of mind does not consider the consequences, if not *welcomes *the death penalty or simply a life sentence.

There is no way that a Christian can be for a premeditated murder. That would include abortion and capital punishment. Jesus was fairly clear about both.
