Can a Communion Service be held in lieu of Holy Mass on Sunday?

I was out of town for the weekend and visited a tiny Catholic parish for Mass today for Sunday Mass. A lady that I assume is a Eucharistic Minister ran the show, announcing at the beggining that their priest was on vacation so she would be leading the ‘service’ today, which she did. We had a Communion service today, with this lady distributing the Body of Christ from the tabernacle. Was this ok? And did this Communion service count as my Sunday obligation?
