What do you guys think? This is provided that the shooting games aren’t overly violent and they do not promote vices

It’s a game. If it’s not encouraging people to go out and become murderers in real life and it doesn’t have porn in it then I wouldn’t see a problem with it.

Some people are going to be troubled by it if they have issues with guns or think that such games promote violence. I myself don’t have those issues so to me, it would be a matter of individual conscience whether a Catholic person wished to do that job or not. There are good aspects to such games as well as bad aspects IMHO.

I think it depends.

Are you talking about a game like Duck Hunt?

Or are you talking about something like Doom 4?

Something like Duck Hunt would be ok. Something crazy violent like Doom 4 would be very morally questionable if not outright sinful.

God Bless

Yes, I think so.

Of course it depends on the content, and personally I think there are more interesting approaches from both a “game” perspective and an “art” perspective (than say a straight FPS), but I don’t see an inherent issue with developing a shooting game.

Some people get off on violent media the same way one gets off on porn. In fact, I’m convinced that for a number of guys, the two are interconnected. Violent video games wouldn’t be such a hot market item - indeed, they wouldn’t even be produced - if they didn’t appeal to some base, lower instinct that, as Catholics, we’re supposed to rise above.

So I’d argue that violence falls on the same plane as porn. Both objectify other people into mere objects to satisfy someone’s pleasure.

Also, video games present some gray areas and fine lines. How does the OP define “overly violent?” Is there a sanitary way to murder others? What does it mean to “not promote vices?”

I can’t draw a black-and-white line of never-ever, but a Catholic should be in serious prayer before moving forward with this.

Others have given some good answers. I think graphically violent video games are a problem. They promote ‘realism’ but they aren’t real at all. The game mechanics might have some realism to it, the blood splattering may be somewhat real, but it detaches those things from actual reality, which is dangerous. But, I don’t think video games are a different issue from graphic violence in TV and films.

I know a lot of young guys that served in the military enjoy playing games with war themes. Whether people think that’s good or bad, I don’t care. I know a bunch of Marines that play games online on a regular basis as a way of connecting with their buddies.

And being a soldier isn’t an inherently immoral job. So I don’t really see much objection to playing a soldier.

Well, speaking from my own experience, part of the fun comes in a contest of skills. I also think about little boys, my own childhood, and how popular it was to “play army.” (Yes I know I am generalizing.) Video games are to an extent the adult version of “playing army.”

It’s a game.
A form of entertainment.
Many of our stories involve people behaving badly. Because people do behave badly in real life, we live in a fallen world and sometimes we make bad choices.
Then we have to live with the consequences of those choices.
Storytelling is one of the ways we process the darker parts of our nature.

Now, if you were writing video games that promoted shooting innocent people as a fun, cool, positive thing to do, then that would be very very bad.

How about one called Deus Vult set 1096 AD, where you shoot crossbows? 😆

Defending humanity from parasitic aliens is most definitely not a sin.

I disagree, if you watch any entertainment or play any entertaintment that has shooting, porn and other stuff in it and your concious doesnt bug you or condemn you then you might have a seered concious and should consult God for the answer.
