Can a divorced couple remarry?

My wife and I seperated a year ago due to my marity infidelity. We were civilly divorced but never had the Church annul our marriage. We were married in a Catholic church because she is Catholic and I am a Protestant. I have since started converting to the Catholic religion and have began to ask forgiveness for the grave sins I committed.

Since the time we were divorced my wife and I have began to repair our relationship with each other and have even talked about the possibility of getting remarried, although not in the near future, as we both agree I need to atone for my sins, which I will do every day for the rest of my life. What is the Catholic stance on this type of remarriage?

If you are both baptized, the Church would presume that you are sacramentally married but legally separated by means of a civil divorce. If you and your wife agree to remarry, the Church would presume that you are ending your legal separation and resuming common life. You would need to remarry in the eyes of the state, but in the eyes of the Church you would already be married. If and when you and your wife are willing to remarry, call your local diocese’s marriage tribunal for assistance in determining how best to handle the civil remarriage.
