My friend has decided she wants to join the church. We went to talk to my priest this evening and he tell us that due to her first two marriages,( her third husband has died,) we don’t know if the first two are alive or not, that she needs annulments or if they have passed, some proof of that. I am wondering if this is true.

A divorced person only needs an annulment if he/she is currently civilly married to someone else. Being divorced and single is not an impediment to entering the Church.

If your friend wants to be married again, then she would need annulments for her first two marriages.
