Can a EMHC retrieve the Blessed Sacrament from the Tabernacle?

That section also fails to mention remaining consecrated hosts. So are we to asume that there are never any when the deacon is there? You can site and recite this all yoiu want, it doesn’t change what in done by the Church in reality, and that is, the deacon will almost always be the person to go to the tabernacle, even when with our bishop.

Many celebrants do not stay behind the altar after communion, so the deacon does everything, including going to the tabernacle.

You didn’t answer my question, did you find anywhere the GIRM where it states that the ordinary minister of holy communion is prohibited from going to the tabernacle?
In our parish, the priest gathers any remaining Hosts and returns them to the tabernacle then goes to sit, while the deacon purifies the sacred vessels on the altar.

Interestingly enough, in our parish, the celebrant is the one who goes to the Tabernacle, even when the deacon is present.
I missed this statement. I would agree that if the celebrant does stand at the altar and recieves the vessels with remaining host from the CM’s and the tabernacle is directly behind the altar, then it would look out of sorts for the deacon to be there as well. He should recieve the vessels and purrify or cover to purify after mass.

But in most cases this is not so. Th tabernacle is a good distance from the altar, as is the case at my home parish. My home parish, the tabernacle is directly behind the altar, about 75’ back on the rear wall. This is the day chapel where daily mass is held.

The priests who celebrate Sunday mass here always stay at the altar and purify the celebrants chalice and paten, and the deacon reposes the remaining host. If it were a matter of simply turning around and placeing the ciborium into the tabernacle, then i’m sure the celebrant would here too.

Same.

I was wondering though, if consuming the rest of the Blood, is acceptable to be done by EMHCs? I am asking because this is done at my parish, and I know it is forbidden for laity to purify the vessels, and I’m not sure if consuming the rest of the Blood is part of the purification.

In the US, by decree of the USCCB, the norms say:
52. When more of the Precious Blood remains than was necessary for Communion, and if not consumed by the bishop or priest celebrant, “the deacon immediately and reverently consumes at the altar all of the Blood of Christ which remains; he may be assisted, if needs dictate, by other deacons and priests.” (54) When there are extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, they may consume what remains of the Precious Blood from their chalice of distribution with permission of the diocesan bishop.

You might get the response that “just because the GIRM doesn’t specifically prohibit it doesn’t mean it is allowed, i.e. that it does not specify that it is allowed so it must be prohibited” 😉

In our parish, the Deacon does it when he’s present, and an EMHC does it when there is no deacon. Our tabernacle is off to the side of the front of the church, maybe 30 feet or so from the sanctuary.

Even in this instance, an EMHC should not be doing this. Once the EMHC has finished assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion, he needs to return to his pew.

Yes, I figured to get that responce, but it’s all good.😃

Your description is what happens in our parish. If I’m not there the cup minister with the priest goes to the tabenacle.

It seems sometimes we always step out of our bounds. I was in agreement here with you untill you say that they should “return to his pew.” As to say as soon as the CM finishes the duty, immediately he has to vacate the sanctuary. We train and ask our EMHC to wait together until the remaining host are reposed before vacateing, all eys are on the tabernacle untill closed, then genuflect with the deacon who reposes normally, then leave.

Part of the reason you and I often differ is because there are always little differences in environment, and circumstances and customes, all of which are a part of Liturgy and will never be removed. Little differences don’t always point to abuse, sometimes it does. When it does show signs of abuse, it should be delt with. But here again, this is no easy chore. To say it is, or to demand others to do so immediately shows me that those have never been involved hands on with parish liturgy.

Anyway, I believe we are all looking for the same ting, the most beautiful and correct liturgy, so that the faithfull may enjoy full and active participation in the worship of our God. Maybe we can agree with that…👍

Our MC does it as we have only one priest with no deacon. I’ve also seen it at the daily Mass where I attend too. In the case of the MC…he is up there with the altar servers…and retrieves from the tabernacle…and then leaves the santuary to stand with the EMHC’s until the priest communicates. But of course…during daily Mass at my home parish…there is only one priest…no MC and the priest goes to the tabernacle both times.

Unless the MC is a priest, he should not be doing this.

I was hoping to hear from someone other than you…no disrespect but in a lot of your posts you seem like you think your the self proclaimed expert…but I have no idea if you are…or just some joe on the internet who thinks they know:shrug:

…and unless you are a priest who is a liturgist…please stop posting with the tone you have. you are always the “expert” and i would bet you have no real practicle experience in liturgy in a parish. Nothing is as absolute as you state here constantly.

If this MC is a duly instituted acolyte he could be comissioned by the pastor to serve this role in cases you mention, when there is no other ordained minister to perform the duty.

On the other hand, if you were to take the hard line that benedictgal takes, I can’t even aproach teh tabernacle…😃

I am the original poster. Thanks for all your answers. But… I am looking for documentation for not sending the EMHC “to” the tabernacle “before Holy Communion”. As far as I can see most if not all, these replies address the situation “after” Holy Communion. by the time distribution is finished, it is too late to do much about the situation “before” it.
I have read all of the posts in the previous thread from
December 2010 & have found nothing that gives me anything to go on.
Anyone have any suggestions?

That’s the point, you won’t find a document stateing the proper way to do this before communion, because it shouldn’t be a routine. Only time the reserved host should be used is to consume excess or to rotate reserved host to avoid the host becoming stale or corupt.

Even if the priest needs assistance walking? We have an elderly visiting priest who needs assistance to get up the stairs to the sanctuary and who does not distrubute communion (presumably either from shakey hands or because he has trouble standing for that length of time, I don’t know which).

Thanks. So, how do I tell this to Father?
That’s the touchy point…my pastor is not open to changing the process. Going to the bishop would probably “fix” this problem, but at what cost? Sometimes this is just a balanceing act, unfourtunately.

I’ll PM the rest of my response. I don’t feel confident posting publically the whole story.

There is no need for you and the other posters to be rude about this. The documents clearly state who is supposed to be going where and when. The problem is that we’ve either become so accustomed to abuse that it becomes the norm, we ignore the what the rubrics state or we just don’t know about them in the first place.

To simply be condescending to people who are giving answers based on what the actual documents say is to not be charitable in the least.

I see EMHC opening up the Tabernacle and reaching in (moving Him around or checking to see if there is enough Hosts to go around I suspect) but I never see them removing the Blessed Sacrament. Still, it annoys me to no end.
