Not quite. The prohibition against ordaining homosexual men isn’t new. It has only been recently restated.

– Mark L. Chance.

The recent sex scandels within the Church showed a strong correlation between abuses and homosexuality. I believe the final results showed that over 80% of the abuse cases involved teenage boys. Now certain Bishops and Priests are going around the country to each seminary interviewing each seminarian to see if homosexuality is an issue. If so there is a good chance that they will be taken out of the seminary and rightly so.

Can a gay man who remains celibate be ordained? The question here is can he remain celibate. Most all dioceses, especially the ones that just got done paying millions of dollars to settle law suits on abuse cases will not take the chance. If a person has homosexual thoughts or has been involved in this behavior it shows a sexual disorder is there. Only the best of the best should be considered for the priesthood. After Vatican II the seminarys opened their doors and allowed anyone to be ordained. The Church payed a very high price as did many innocent victims.

Is there really data that shows a homosexual is less capable of celibacy than a heterosexual or that a homosexual is more likely to be a pedophile (not that you said that)? I’d be very interested in reading more about this. I am not at all arguing or challenging you. I’m just interested, from a psychological standpoint, to read more evidence of what you stated.

Thanks

There is a $2+ BILLION lesson (all the settlements) that male homosexual sexual desires are stronger on average than male heterosexual sexual desires–one of the few valid results of Alfred Kinsey’s flawed studies pointed this out 50+ years ago–since Kinsey’s research disproportionaly concentrated on homosexual sources.

Pedophilia is NOT the desire for teenage boys–which better than 90% of the abuse cases involve. Pedophilia, per the DSM IV, is sexual desire for pre-pubescent children. Alas, the homosexual priest abusers were enacting a fairly common gay pattern of breaking the age barrier with post pubescent teenage males. STILL a mortal sin, breaking of the law (depending on jurisdiction age-of consent and wether the contact was consensual or forcible) and a monstrous violation of trust, authority, and sacred vows–but not the same sort of violation the abuse of a little child is.

Pope Paul VI stated in a public address (I’m afraid after all these years I do not have a reference) that there must have been saints who were oriented to their own sex, let alone priests, bishops, and cardinals. He understood the difference between that which we cannot choose (orientation) and that which we can (action).

The current policy is to not allow men who are even oriented as homosexuals into the secular priesthood. This was initiated under JP II and, depending on the country, is dealt with through strict psychological screening (which of course is designed to identify more than just this). It is not a flawless process and one must assume that some men who think their calling to the priesthood is stronger than anything else still “get through.”

A couple of thoughts: The modern world assumes that sexuality is irrepressible and in fact does everything possible to make it so. In older times, it is perfectly possible to imagine that many saintly figures not to mention more ordinary ones of fine character successfully subsumed their sexuality under what they would have thought of as a higher calling. That is still possible today for both heterosexuals and homosexuals; it is just not widely accepted as so, or even in some contexts as desirable.

The other thought I offer is more practical. Keeping homosexuals out of the priesthood has nothing to do with the morality of orientation. The Church long ago conceded formally that homosexuals have no choice over their feelings and must be dealt with in charity in that respect. The practical problem is the sex scandals, most of which involve boys. I don’t agree with every aspect of church discipline, but frankly, if I were the pope and had the nightmare of this level of scandal on my hands, I would also choose an arbitrary way to make it go away.

I remember reading the stats a while back. Even though homosexuals comprise 1-3% of the population, they account for about 1/3 of the cases of molestation.

Some sociololigists will discount this by not defining an adult male molesting a male child as ‘homosexual’ in nature, but rather a seperate class of pedophilia, and reserve the term ‘homosexual’ to post pubesents only.

That would, of course, be a false reading of the term ‘homosexual’.

Yes, the media will not disclose the truth about homosexuality and its disorder. Homosexual men are extremely draw to young men (teenage boys). Most of the priest involved in scandels were with teenage boys showing the true nature of homosexuality. Often times people will say, yes but who is to say a hetersexual priest won’t have relations with a teenage girl or women. My answer to this question would be that it is normal for a man to be physically attracted to women. If a seminarian struggles with masturbation or is draw to women in an abnomal way, they too shouldn’t be ordained. If a semanarian is plagued with homosexual thoughts or has acted on these thought, they show symptoms of sexual disorder that will more than likely only surface in even a more perverse form with the stress of the priesthood. Also one must understand that the devil will use this against a priest, and what greater prize for the devil than to bring down a priest, innocent victims, and ultimately the Church as we have seen in the past.

The vast majority of priests in this country are celebate heterosexuals. It would be interesting to find the difference in percentage between heterosexual priests who violate their vow of celebacy with women and that of homosexual priests violating it with men. Something tells me that the numbers would be significantly different.

the Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary or to holy orders those who practise homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called “gay culture”… Different, however, would be the case in which one were dealing with homosexual tendencies that were only the expression of a transitory problem - for example, that of an adolescence not yet superseded. Nevertheless, such tendencies must be clearly overcome at least three years before ordination to the diaconate.

I think this is the document to which the OP is referring. It appears to offer some “wriggle room”, but in no case should someone who identifies as gay be accepted for ordination.

That is correct. It used to be that this was not an automatic disqualification for receiving Holy Orders. However since the clerical child abuse crisis it has been found that 95+ % of the cases were actually homosexual at their root and not pedophilia.

Oh, Come on people!!! Face reality, the answer is YES they can be ordained, IF they go to a GAY friendly Bishop. Which at this point is obviously, a sizable percentage considering the vast attempted coverups of the predator homosexual presbyters whose actions are now bankrupting diocese after dioces. These are the fruits of Vatican II’s new theology and collegiality.

By “celibate” I presume you mean the correct definition of “unmarried.” Celibate people can have all the sex they want; if they get married they are by definition not celibate, even if they never have sex.

You are confusing ‘Chaste’ with ‘Celibate’.

Chastity is the following of God’s Plan for sex.

A Chaste married couple may have sex. An unmarried chaste person does not.

Celibacy is a public vow of sexual abstinece, so a “Celibate” person, even if married, abstains from sex.

I feel if one stays committed to celibacy he should be allowed to be a priest. A priest still has to understand our weaknesses and to require only heterosexual priests would eliminate anyone who understands what it is like to be tempted in the homosexual direction. Even St. Paul did not call for super apostles.

The Pope may state it, but it isn’t being followed, take a look at our semiaries, they look like a YMCA reunion tour or Streisand tickets just went on sale… Of my past three parishes all but two priests were homosexual, or at least acted incredibly effeminate that I thought them to be homosexual.

Homosexual men are too pschologically disordered to handle celibacy or the priesthood.

You are the one confusing celibacy and chastity. Celibacy is the state of being unmarried.
