Society is re-defining what’s marriage and we know how wrong that is. But what to say about what’s constitute a family? Can a homosexual couple raising kids be called family or we are re-defining what’s a family? Is the term “family” only be designated as “man+woman+/-kids” or “divorced man/woman+kids”?

Dictionary definition: “In human context, a family is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity (by recognized birth), affinity (by marriage), or co-residence/shared consumption (see Nurture kinship). Members of the immediate family may include a spouse, parent, brother and sister, and son and daughter. Members of the extended family may include grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, nephew and niece, or sibling-in-law.”

So the answer is - YES - they ARE a family. Full stop.

I believe this thread already got pulled once?

Anyway, I’ll keep my response short: Yes, they are families. Families come in all shapes and sizes.

I would think redefining marriage would be a different case/question than asking what is a family. Just because a couple does not have a “valid marriage” does not make them not a family.

There are of course different types of families. You would be surprised at the different family structures there are outside of “man+woman+/-kids” or “divorced man/woman+kids” or traditional families. Different types of families form for many different reasons eg. war, poverty, migration, culture etc.

***Edited: Just saw that this thread got pulled once. Guess the OP did not like the answers received.:o:o:o

So I looked up family and it turns out that in Latin, it meant all the people in a house including the servants. I think that “family’s” hold on “parents + children” is somewhat tenuous–that does not seem to be something we were interested in having a word for until households were made up of only nuclear families. And certainly in our society it has expanded or changed to mean the people I love and who love me.

So I think it’s a different kind if word than marriage is. Marriage is the formation of a unit if some type which is recognized in a very similar form in most societies and which has a definite function. Family, OTOH, does not seem to be in this category.

I think we do a disservice when we try to take culture war concepts and apply religious significance to them.

There are a lot of families that are not "traditional’, but I think most people would argue that a family exists even if it does look like something out of the fifties.

Yup! That is absolutely a family. Single parents, gay parents, no children, 10 children, divorced/remarried, multiethnic, multiracial, multi religious, pets, wealth, etc. do not matter when defining a family.

I assume you are trying to get the answer that it is not a family. That answer would be incorrect.

Honestly, think of it this way. We, as Catholics, believe that homosexual “marriages” are not just wrong, they are impossible. As such, we cannot show recognition for one. However, would we go to a child adopted by two gay men or two lesbian women and tell them “You don’t have a real family?” Of course not. Regardless of their family, the children being raised by such a union should not be discriminated against. The definition of family, pretty much, is whatever the person wants it to be. We consider pets to be family members, and they aren’t even human!

You can “call it” a family…but it is not a normal family.

I never considered *Sly and the Family Stone *to be a normal family, They were a band.

Ask a child to define a family. They will say: “Mommy, Daddy, and kids”. There is truth!

When a five year old answers: “Well…sociologically speaking…today a “family” can consist of many diverse things…” then we are all in big trouble.

You can “call it” a family…but it is not a normal family.
And what would you call a “normal family”? Families are all different. Some have two parents, some have one. Some have five children, some have one. Some families have “step” or “half” in front of “dad” and “sister”, but this does not stop them from being a family.

I would like to know what a normal family is.

Do you think that it has to be a mother/father/kids situation? Because I would like to know what your standing are on single parents.

I call a normal family a family. Because the** VAST majority** of families consist of Mommies, Daddies, and Children produced by the Mommy and Daddy. Anything else is different. Not wrong or evil…just different…and should be differentiated as such.

You can call a herd of Buffalo a family, but it IS different from a human family.

So are you saying that any family with a “step” or a “half” should not be called a family? There is no such thing as a “normal family”, IMO. Every family is different, but that does not mean they cannot be called a family.

A single parent family is just that…a single parent family. Nothing wrong with it at all. It is just different than a normal family.

What about Children adopted by the Mommy and Daddy? In your opinion, is that a family? If not, what is it?

Nope, not saying that at all. A family with step kids has all the outward appearances of a normal family (unless there is a remarkable racial difference) so…who cares?

Adoptive parents with children of a different race are, of course a family, but the difference is obvious.

(When I say “parents” I am referring to a normal couple, Man and Woman)

Yes. The answer to your question is yes.
dusts hands off
Well, that’s that, then. 😃

So, yes they can be called a family is what I’m understanding from your post.

For decades, homosexualists have been using circumlocutions to insinuate their lifestyle into common parlance. Lover, partner, domestic partner, etc. So it is only fair that we offer circumlocutions so that we do not sully the word “family” to apply it to homosexuals playing house.

So let’s see, what else could we call it? A confab? A gaggle of gays? I’m open to more suggestions.
