Can laymen obtain an S.T.D. (doctorate degree in sacred theology) or is that reserved for the clergy? If so what could they do for the Church?

Yes, laymen may obtain a Doctorate of Sacred Theology. Some laymen use such doctorates to teach on the parish, diocesan, or university level. Others may use them to work in various capacities for their local bishop, such as reading manuscripts, granting the nihil obstat, and making a recommendation to the bishop for an imprimatur.
