At my parish there is a reserve chapel where the Tabernacle is placed. Am I allowed to open the tabernacle to observe the Blessed Sacrament during private adoration?

Thank you!

Only an EMHC may remove the Blessed Sacrament from the Tabernacle and then only with authorisation.

If there is to be Exposition, the normal situation is for a priest or a deacon to remove and replace the Sacrament (usually in the form of the ‘oversized’ host). An EMHC might be able to be delegated but he or she may not bless the congregation using the monstrance: he must simply (and reverently) remove and replace the Sacrament without ceremony.

Nobody else may legitimately open the Tabernacle for any reason.*

There is of course nothing whatsoever to stop you from adoring Jesus while He resides within the Tabernacle. You know he’s there. He knows you’re there. Your devotions need not be impeded.

(* except perhaps if required to in order to prevent the Sacrament within being profaned in some way - a fire, marauding looters, etc. Someone might need to back that up with actual regulations though as I’m not totally sure about that one.)

I believe it is written somewhere that the tabernacle has to be locked, so no one would be able to open it without permission of the pastor. In our parish, sometimes EMHCs need to go to the tabernacle when the pastor is not available. In that case the pastor’s assistant has the key and will only give it to an EMHC from our parish and they have to bring it immediately back after taking out a host and then locking the tabernacle again. Also if the assistant does not know the person she checks to make sure the person really is one of our EMHCs. They also have to sign a book stating who they were brining the Eucharist to, with address and phone.

We have a perpetual adoration chapel but there are times when someone doesn’t show up or must leave early. The Eucharist cannot be left exposed and unattended so I’m assuming the attendant on duty must be able to remove it from the Monstrance and secure it the Tabernacle, yes - no?

A lay person with specific instruction from the Pastor can, usually an EMHC. But any lay person for any reason? No.

So since most of the attendants are not qualified EMCH they must have received special instruction and permission from the pastor to be exercised only under specific conditions. The alternative is to phone over to the rectory but the priests are often not available due parish duties.

Yes, they would have to be trained by the Pastor.

But the gist of it is, in context with the question of the OP, only trained lay persons with specific instruction and permission from the Pastor (or perhaps any priest) may open the Tabernacle at any time.

Understood. Also for those who may not realize it, the Host is fully encased in a pyx, an insert to the monstrance and not handled by the adoration attendants.
