Without a romantic entanglement developing?
I say no.
You are 100% correct, of course.
Everyone knew this until Feminism became a mainstream ideology in the 1970s as a result of its positive portrayal in movies, on TV, in high schools and universities, and as a result of the flooding of women into the work force at about this same time.
The trouble is that once you acknowledge that men and women cannot be just friends, then you are also acknowledging that women can never really be equal in the workplace or in the professions, since life in workplaces and in the professions is based upon informal networks of friends. This has often been called “the old boy’s network” or “the men’s club.”
So, then what are women supposed to do? Just stay home and have babies and raise children? Well, that is mainly what women in the USA used to do, and is mainly what women in Muslim countries still do.
But, in the America of today, even Catholic and Christian women feel ashamed if they don’t have a career outside the home. Most of them feel this way anyway. They have no choice about this shame. It is imposed on them by the General Society in which they (we) live.
Even so, your position is still correct. Romeo and Juliet could never “just be friends.” Dante and Beatrice could never “just be friends.”
Even in lower social mammals, such as apes and wolves, we see that there is a male section of the group, and a female section of the group, and the members of each section stay apart except for purposes of mating, reproduction and perhaps raising and protecting the young ones.
The saddest thing to see is when a guy thinks the way to get a gal as his girlfriend is to first become her friend. Some women make the same mistake with guys. I’ve NEVER see a case of this having a happy ending, have you?
Furthermore, all this goes to show that “romantic love” is not unselfish. Some people feel that romantic love between a man and woman is all about unselfish giving and so on. But, in fact, unselfish giving is really only possible in non-romantic family relationships or in non-romantic same-gender friendship relationships.
This is why, in former times, non-romantic same gender friendship relationships were always exalted as more important than than romantic or marital relationships.
It was not until fairly recent times that the idea came into vogue that one’s relationship with one’s spouse was one’s most important relationship.
Isn’t that amazing?
